The author of this book, Peter Hupalo, self-published his first book, Thinking Like An Entrepreneur in 1999, thus beginning his company, HCM Publishing. This book appears to be the second book he has self-published, though he does not mention how many books by other authors he has published. I found this book relatively educational in that I think it would be useful, though by no means comprehensive, for a new small publisher. It is very heavy on numbers, spending most of the book discussing how to make a profit, pricing, taxes, and accounting issues. Unfortunately, most of the non-number information is common sense and rather brief.
- The author of this book, Peter Hupalo, self-published his first book, Thinking Like An Entrepreneur in 1999, thus beginning his company, HCM Publishing
- The next section of the book is on marketing
- Hupalo is much more in his element in the next section, on book pricing
- In deciding on a price for your book, Hupalo writes, you should first estimate your gross profit margin to use as a guide
- The next section is on business structure and related tax issues.
- After a brief section on sales tax and use tax, Hupalo continues into tax deductions and inventory accounting
- Then, Hupalo goes back to inventory accounting to discuss two more methods
- The next-to-last section is on record keeping

In its first season, American Idol garnered the attention of 22.77 million viewers on the finale night. The last seasonthe shows fifth36.38 million people tuned in to witness Taylor Hicks take home the ultimate title of American Idol (Wikepedia.com). Hicks, a stocky, gray-haired thirty-year old from Birmingham, Alabama could not have possibly foreseen the astronomical result of his performances. In his first audition, Simon Cowell, the judge with a notoriously stern British accent and attitude, voted against Taylors advancement in the competition because he saw an overall lack of talent and commerciality. So how did a struggling Vegas lounge act win the votes and hearts of America?
- . In The Salon of 1859, Boudelaire insists, 'This generation, in fact, both artists and public, has so little faith in painting that it spends its time in seeking to disguise it, to wrap it up in sugar pills like an unpleasant medicine; and what sugar?
- Next throw in a few country artists for good measure (give the people what they want!)
- Unfortunately, even those different contestants like Hicks forfeit all authenticity by singing nothing but cover songs
- In A Little Private Tuition for my Friend Max Gorelik, Roberto Brecht further emphasizes this notion by describing the aspects of Hollywood and Broadway
- The modern theatre musn't be judged by its success in satisfying the audience's habits but by its success in transforming them
- In stark contrast on American Idol, the performers are not singing to change the world, but instead contestants like Carrie Underwood from a red-neck upbringing, sing to change their status in a world obsessed with fame

Opening Nick Flynns first published book of poetry, Some Ether, is like peering through a textured window. While the colors and images are sharp, the objects and sentiments are distortedcandidates for unique interpretations. Flynns fragmented poetry reflects his confusion in coping with his mothers suicide. Many poetic devices illustrate his surging emotionsprimarily his use of line/stanza breaks and voice. The enjambment and variation in points of view emphasize Flynns belief that there is more than one way to interpret each poem.
- Because his mother's death occurred during his youth, many of his poems have childhood memories and quotations interwoven throughout
- In analyzing the selected poetry, it is essential to break down the pieces in two different manners'the first, examining the form
- In addition Flynn's use of syntax further conveys feelings of confusion as long sentences followed by questions are a common occurrence
- Another quality of Flynn's poetry is the way he shifts the voice he uses so often and effortlessly
- When examined on a less superficial level, the content of the selected pieces contains an abundance of poetic devices
- In order to discover an underlying theme to Flynn's poetry, it is essential to examine the selected poems as a group, in general
- While suicide is a serious issue, it is often cliché in literature.

In 1790, Immanuel Kant published an essay that read as complicated as the art he sought to promote. Critique of Judgment serves as the ultimate philosophy of aesthetics, proclaiming Genius is the talent (or natural gift) which gives rule to art (Kant 150). Kants judgments define true art as solely deriving from intellect. Not only does his notion of art as reserved for brilliant minds exclude most people in general, but also rejects the value of emotion. Instead, people are encouraged to survive strictly on logic and ignore politics. Such disparity between mind and body, reason and emotion, isolates humanity from the very nature which makes us human. Kant even goes a step further to categorize art though gender: men compose the intellectual genius and women, the emotional barbaric. However, over two-hundred years later, the Avante-Garde movement unleashed the definitive rebuttal against its highly aesthetic predecessorsextreme emotion. An innovator of the Avante-Garde, Lautréamont employs the concept of negation to wage a war against aestheticism in art. In Les Chants de Maldoror, his exercise in shock value subtly implores us to feel anger at the tolerance of injustice that aestheticism encouraged. Were his tactics successful in spreading anger and other emotion as both a reaction to and inspiration for art?
- A collective group of female music producers and consumers alike use sounds and lyrics to express outrage to 'reject the forms of the middle-class, white, youth culture they have inherited??
- Here, at the beginning of the book, Lautréamont plays instigator in immediately arousing reactions of disgust.
- Yet, Maldoror's own 'pity for the unfortunate' is a reoccurring theme of Lautréamont; such deep pity is symbolic of rich emotion and intolerance of injustice.
- Similarly, Riot Grrrls use negation in the form out outrage to perpetuate urgent emotional responses to everyday injustices faced by women
- In addition, the language used by Riot Grrrls is an answer to masculine language in rock
- The use of screaming in the Riot Grrrl movement also represents a voice of negation
- Lautréamont's character, Maldoror, experiences a similar release: In describing another grotesque encounter of injustice, Maldoror responds, ''I quaked like the lava inside of a volcano.
- The private universe inner-nature of a woman'including but not limited to sexuality and experiences of patriarchal violence'becomes tangible because of the public display

To the surprise of fans and American Idol producers alike (in varying degrees of delightful glee and ghastly shock), Clarksons second album conveyed an entirely different message than the first. Entitled Breakaway, the music simply delves deeper than the playful bubbles at the surface of all pop music. But what constitutes a fan insisting that Clarksons music has improved? What appropriate standards exist to make such a quick judgment? According to Simon Frith, the ability to implement real meaning in a song rests in the facets of the voice. Through meaningful lyrics, a song can succeed in exceeding expectations set by the pop genre. Miranda Fricker takes this notion further, attesting that different kinds of emotion as reflected in the voice affect the resonance of a song. A minor shift in voice through deepening emotion will change the expectations of the listeners altogether. Therefore, a sufficient standard in judging Clarksons work exists in examining Friths idea of the lyrical content balanced by Frickers idea of sound and emotion.
- The song required of Kelly Clarkson to sing on the finale episode of the first season, reflected the notoriously man-made empire of American Idol
- In his book, Performing Rites, Simon Frith defines these standards of pop music.
- After establishing the central meaning of genre through the eyes of production, it is time to explore the internal components of the songs
- The shift indicates a movement back to singularity'an intimate note for Kelly Clarkson herself
- Unlike its passive predecessor, the lyrics of 'Since You've Been Gone' demonstrate the benefits of action.
- Listeners can identify with this meaning, as everyone has been seriously disappointed by a loved one
- Through a shift in sound and emotion, however, Clarkson tests the limits of the pop genre in which she is hopelessly trapped
- However, this does not mean that emotion automatically causes a song to depreciate in meaning
- Clarkson speaks candidly, the beat in the background a repetitious thumping of drums, conjuring the image of a beating heart to convey a sense of authentic emotion
- Thus, the major problem stands: how do young people, without access to academic theories from writers like Frith and Fricker, discover and apply such standards to judge the quality of popular music?

The assignment states that language use in discourse communities functions (in part) to exclude others. While this is true in many cases, sometimes language use in discourse communities actually functions to include others. After all, the goal of any publication, be it a newspaper, a science journal, or a magazine, sets forth the goal of maximizing its readership, not excluding any potential subscribers. In attempts to include others, a publication must use non-exclusionist writing, so that a person who does not belong to the discourse community can easily digest and comprehend the writing.

Ragtime is an American musical genre that was most popular during the first twenty years of the 20th century. It is a dance form that is written in 2/4 or 4/4 time, where there is a walking bass that plays legato on beats 1-3 and staccato chords played on 2-4 beats in the right hand. A big portion of ragtime is written in classical (Sonata) form. This type of structure includes four themes, where the last theme is altered. Ragtime is known to have a syncopated feel and is written so that off-beats get accented.
- If they have any breakthroughs in developing new products, however, it could launch the price of their stock up a good amount
- Some confuse ragtime and early jazz as being in the same musical category
- Ragtime music had its roots in the minstrel performances, but it developed its own flavor; while important to the creation of jazz, ragtime is separate style
- Ragtime's most striking characteristic was its use of right-hand syncopated phrases
- Not only did ragtime follow rules of rhythm, but of structure and harmony, as well. The structure, or form, of most rags is similar to marches.
- Though Scott Joplin's music is the most famous ragtime music, there are holes in what we know about his life.
- Ragtime is believed to be a strong influence on early jazz and blues music.
- Though most rags were composed to be played on the piano, it is not meant to be exclusively played on the piano.
- Cakewalk was a dance form that grew in popularity until 1904, and is meant to exhibit an African American dance contest, where the prize is a cake

To experience music as it is exactly is a great thing, but a difficult thing. Being an audience to a piece of music does not ensure such experience, and in fact the performers of music themselves can experience music. Bystanders and composers also experience music in unique ways. All of these people who experience music have parts of their experience in common. The music affects each and every person, and each and every person then recovers the music in a particular way. To recover music is to be able to respond to music as well as simply to listen to it. When you respond to music, you make your mark on it, casting it in your terms. But the [music] makes its mark on you as well, teaching you not only about a subject but about a way of seeing and understanding a subject (Bartholomae and Petrosky 4). You will be able to see through someone elses powerful language (Bartholomae and Petrosky 4).
- Each sort of recovery is unique: first let us take the case of a bystander
- Another example of recovery is the experience of a musician preparing to give his work to the public.
- Now, let us give this musician an audience.
- Barring such perfect circumstances, recovery can still occur.
- Sophistication is not necessary for such recovery
- The average listener will recover music best listening to pieces that are a common part of the culture of his time
- Every sort of recovery has its own advantages, and the recovery of the composer may in fact be the most complete.
- In this way, the composer gives birth to music.
