Résumé :
To what extent did the particular situation of Cuba in post World War Two international relations influenced international relations theory? And according to current IR theory, what are the perspectives for Cuba today?
International relations theory is likely to be a functional tool of comprehension of world politics, but it is also to some extends a result of world politics. In facts, it appears that the Cuban crisis was a turning point in the Cold War, thus in international relations in general. The modification of the international relation system at the time gave rise to new analysis, leading to new international relations theories. This sequence was even more important after the USSR collapsed and brought an end to the Cold War.
The Cuban foreign policy had a major role in international relation system all along the second half of the twentieth century, but also -within the process it was part of- participated in elaborating new international relations theories.
The actual situation in Cuba also presents a great interest: in fact, since the sixties, the world evolved with Cuba still stuck in the same internal situation it was during the Cold War and the same political regime leaded by the same Fidel castro. However, the situation is about to change, Fidel castro having health problems and being likely to be the survival factor of his political regime. With its leader gone, Cuba, still communist or not, will have to open and adapt to a globalized world, and in particular to its hegemonic neighbour, the United States. The anticipating aspect of IR theory could be very valuable here.
Therefore we can ask ourselves the following questions: To what extent did the particular situation of Cuba in post World War Two international relations influenced international relations theory? And according to current IR theory, what are the perspectives for Cuba today?
