Résumé :
De Valera founded fianna Fail in 1926. He thought that a new political party was needed to oppose the partition of Ireland (established by the 1921 Treaty). Actually he was notably disappointed by the lack of opposition of Sinn Fein against the 1926 Finance Bill, because this Bill "made the partition of Ireland official" (McCarthy). So, fianna Fail was built on a strong anti-Treaty basis, and against Cosgrave's Constitution of the Irish Free State (1922) which gave to Ireland the status of a dominion of Great Britain (McCarthy). As a matter of fact fianna Fail's was different from Cosgrave's conservative government (Cumann na nGaedheal that became Fine Gael in1933) in many respects.
Therefore we shall wonder in this essay to what extent fianna Fail was a dissident party and we shall examine how successful its achievements were between 1932 and 1938. When De Valera came to power in 1932, the program of fianna Fail was undeniably revolutionary to some extent, but De Valera's government also strived to achieve some stability between 1932 and 1938. So we shall firstly dwell on the radical measures taken by De Valera's government in foreign policy and economy before 1937 (in part I and II). Secondly we shall see that De Valera's government could also be very conservative when dealing with social and religious matters, and when dealing with some subversive movements like the IRA. Lastly we shall focus on the significance of De Valera's new Constitution and the end of the economic war to the history of Ireland and fianna Fail.
