Public middle and high schools across the nation are pulling books off library shelves because parents, administrators, or teachers deem them inappropriate for student use. By removing books from libraries, faculty and parents are putting students in these censored schools at a disadvantage compared to their counterparts in other uncensored schools. The issue of censorship in public school libraries goes beyond determining the appropriate content of books, defending morals and values, or even allowing students opportunities for decision making. Though these issues are relevant and should be addressed, the main concern with censoring books in public school libraries classrooms is that by censoring the materials students are exposed to, they are given incomplete educations that will not prepare them for the next educational level: college.

A goal often lost in the academic and educational world in the necessity of a concrete connection between our academic growth and its application to the real world. In my time at Northeastern, I have worked very hard to balance the knowledge I gained in the classroom with experiences that are real and relevant to me. Being interested in business from the very start, a lot of my courses have focused on business and finance, but I was eager to expand my experience and interest beyond the classroom, and so my time at Alidade Incorporated, my co-op work experience, was also very helpful to me. While growing and preparing myself for the professional world, I did not neglect my personal growth either. My experience in the liberal arts helped me appreciate the great literary aspects of Russian culture, and helped me learn to express myself too.

“In special education there is a presumption that student success occurs most effectively and efficiently when children with disabilities actually receive education services in general education classrooms and are not removed or segregated in separate education classes” (Luster and Durrett, 2003, p. 2). And since the 1997 reauthorization of Public Law 94-192 that states the school district is responsible for ensuring that special education students receive the general education requirements, this presumption can become a possibility (Wischnowski and Salmon and Eaton, 2004). All students deserve the chance to have the same education, regardless of race, sex, or disability. However, that is not always the case.

To abstain or not to abstain? Seems like everyone has their own answer to this question. The educational system is doing most of the answering for us. There are two types of proposed programs that are floating around; abstinence-only programs that teach kids that abstinence is the only good choice and a comprehensive sex education, which acknowledges sex as a premarital behavior and provides safety information. Telling kids all the dangers associated with sex and saying the only way to survive is by not having sex is blatantly wrong. It is denying kids information that can save their lives. Sex education needs to encompass every aspect of sexual relationships, acknowledge that people do and will have sex, and provide them with the tools to make informed decisions.

  3. When sex education became nationwide between 1925 and 1940, educators were afraid that talking about prostitution, adultery, and prophylactic methods would make the students more promiscuous.
  4. As the number of teenage pregnancies rose and AIDS spread, people became more worried.
  5. In our current age there is now an ongoing debate as to what type of sex education is more beneficent for our children.
  6. However the relationship between the decrease in teen pregnancy and these abstinence-only programs, has been misinterpreted.
  7. Also, advocates for abstinence-only show statistics for an increase of STDs in America.
  8. Most of the time abstinence programs only teach with fear, scaring children, not really educating them, using actual medical facts
  9. The next step would be to take this idea and combine it with the teacher-taught comprehensive sex education programs.

In the immortal words of William Tecumseh Sherman, “War is hell,” and few wars in history can compare to the raw savagery of World War I . Between the years of 1914 and 1918, an entire generation of men, known as the “lost generation,” was ravaged by the brutality of what they had witnessed . Those that were not physically killed in combat, found themselves dead in a metaphoric sense; unable to integrate back into society many spent their time wandering aimlessly, scorned by the very people they were protecting. Ernest Hemingway, himself a veteran of the war, characterizes the experiences of the “lost generation” in his short stories about Nick Adams . Adams is a young American man who goes to serve in Italy, is wounded in combat, and ultimately returns home, a series of events that closely parallel Hemingway’s own experiences in the war. Like many of the American soldiers that return, Adams is unsure of what to do with his life, and in the short stories “Big Two-Hearted River,” “The End of Something,” and “The Three-Day Blow,” Hemingway chronicles Nick’s attempts at re-adjusting to his old way of life. In these stories Hemingway employs symbolism and diction to illustrate Nick’s efforts to reconcile himself to the world. However, the influence of the war is too permanent, and all of Nick’s efforts are in vain: for the rest of his life, the experiences of the war will continue to plague him.

It is a well-established notion that in his writings, F. Scott Fitzgerald was able to capture the spirit of the 1920’s like few other authors. As a member of the Lost Generation, the group of writers who worked in the years following the First World War, Fitzgerald’s novels and short stories are rife with the wealth, luxury, splendor, and decadence of the times. However, behind this analysis of the social order of America during the Roaring Twenties, lies a hidden criticism of capitalism as a corrupt and dying economic system that mirrors the values and ideas of Karl Marx and his “Communist Manifesto.” Consequently, a predominantly Communist theme that is common in much of Fitzgerald’s work is the idea that capitalism transforms everything, and everybody, into a “commercial commodity.” Specifically, in “The Great Gatsby,” “Bernice Bobs Her Hair,” and “Head and Shoulders,” Fitzgerald displays how Daisy, Bernice, and Marcia are viewed by society as objects to be bought and sold, with their attractiveness as purchases depending largely on their presentation of themselves .

  2. In 'The Great Gatsby,' Fitzgerald expresses his ideas about the transformation of women into commercial commodities through the character of Daisy Buchannon.
  3. A similar analysis can be performed on Fitzgerald's 'Bernice Bobs Her Hair,' with the result being nearly identical.
  4. She further complains that when Bernice talks to boys, she mentions how 'she's going to school in New York next year,' or asks them 'what kind of car they have and tells them the kind she has.?
  5. However, as with Daisy, Marjorie is well aware that society views her as nothing more than an object, a commodity that has something to offer, but she does nothing to change her situation.

  7. As an active Communist, Fitzgerald looked down on capitalism, believing that it was responsible for turning human beings into commercial commodities, objects to be bought and sold, with their attractiveness as purchases depending largely on their presentation of themselves.
