Gregorio and Asunta, a Peruvian Indian couple, tell their life stories in “Andean lives”, a pair of autobiographical narratives edited by two young anthropologists. The story takes place in the highlands of Peru, where millions of indigenous inhabitants who represent the cultural majority, suffer from exploitation and domination. Indeed highland area retains its predominantly Indian culture and traditions. Cuzco, the ancient Incan capital, remains the centre of traditional Indian society today.. In total, the highlands give Peru the fourth highest concentration of Indians in all Latin America. These narratives are first hand testimony and represent one of the first attempts to make indigenous people tell their life stories. This book is very rich and tells us the brutality of everyday life in the highlands in both urban and rural areas. It covers a broad aspect of their lives.
In this essay I will focus on specific issues related in these narratives. I will talk about the social structure of the highlands and then explore the experiences of the indigenous people living in the highlands with racism and domination. Indeed despite the fact that the indigenous people compose a majority in the highlands they are dominated and exploited by the higher social classes. Thus we can wonder how the specific class structure of the highlands allows such dramatic life conditions for indigenous people.

Traditionally, the media tend to focus their attention on the Latino migration in States such as Texas, California, New Mexico, in other words on southern states close to the Mexican border.
The East Coast seems to be completely forgotten as if it remained the gateway of the Europeans into America. It seems that there is no Latino community along the Atlantic if one is to listen to the newspapers.
This vision is naturally untrue and I chose the example of New York City, home to a large Latino community, to emphasize the diversity of the Latino migration to the United States of America. New York in particular strikes my interest as Ellis Island among other symbols of the European migration to the US are located in this particular city whereas ironically, most of today’s migrants come from the Americas.
How did this shift from a mainly European destination to a predominantly Latino place of settlement occur?
First, I will examine the actual shift in terms of history and study the reasons underpinning this tremendous change. Secondly, I will emphasize the geographical implications of this shift within the city, more precisely where the new migrants settled and how the face of New York changed over the decades. Lastly, I will address the future of this new wave of migration and try to hypothesize whether this change is to last or not.

What makes Paris the number one tourist destination in the world lies in the myriad cultural and historical landmarks that have not only shaped modern society, but continue to challenge and inspire those who will only be considered visitors. The most famous attributes of Paris are iconic and unequivocally recognizable. Almost every film that features Paris will highlight the "Notre Dame" and the "Tour Eiffel", two monuments that have been instrumental in preserving its history. From a cultural perspective, the Latin Quarter as well as the Champs Elysées have and still continue to make significant contributions to the art and fashion worlds. These famed attractions are in addition to the world's most famous museums, like the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, and Centre Pompidou, which house arguably the most valuable works of art currently in existence. Aside from these attributes, Paris also remains a global financial center, home to the fifth largest municipal economy. La Defense remains the center of the city's financial district and houses over 1500 businesses, 14 of which constitute the top 20 in France, and 15 of which constitute the top 50 internationally.

Transnistria, also known as the Pridnestrovskaya Moldavskaya Respublika (PMR), is a republic unrecognized by any government in the world. Lying on a narrow swath of land along the left bank of the Dniester River, the territory’s leaders call it a republic. Transnistria has been declaring itself independent since 1990, and is an example of a post-Soviet breakaway republic much like Georgia’s Abkhazia and South Ossetia. To begin to examine why Transnistria wants to break away from Moldova, one must thoroughly examine its history alongside Moldova’s, its cultural and ethnic differences, and its current political and economic situation. Only after the facts have been given and both sides opinions heard can a solution be found.

One of our nation’s least appreciated national parks is Big Bend National Park, located in a remote region of southwest Texas, situated on 118 miles of the Rio Grande and Mexican border. Since its inception over 60 years ago, Big Bend has welcomed visitors to explore its stunning diversity of geological features and animal and plant life. The multitude of glowing descriptions of hiking and backpacking trips in Big Bend illustrate how personally affecting a trip to Big Bend can be. Its positive impact on visitors to the park cannot be mistaken, just as its positive impact on the neighboring communities cannot be overlooked. Big Bend National Park has benefited the livelihoods of those in neighboring communities by preserving local ecological diversity and offering employment and business opportunities throughout its history.

Guidebooks are important because they are portable, they contain a surplus of information on destinations and they are easy to refer to. Noteworthy information guidebooks provide are the “must know” elements of different areas including advice on the culture and safety within destinations. The most important aspect of a guidebook is its portability and the ease of extracting information from it. A traveler can easily find himself on a train, wondering about his upcoming destination and it is a guidebook that is able to provide the traveler with a brief history of the destination, places to stay, places to eat, and what to see. Some guidebooks even include “off the beaten track” places where they will be more likely to experience the local people and culture.
