Résumé :
Prior to Indochina War I and Indochina War II, French Indochina was a part of the French Colonial Empire of South East Asia. French interest in South East Asian affairs initially varied but grew over time, especially in the seventeenth century, due to domestic politics and competition with British colonial expansion. The Nguyen Dynasty, lead by Emperor Gia Long, resorted to power in 1802, under the assistance from the French. Tensions between the costs and benefits of European assistance lead to debate among the natives, as foreign infiltration challenged existing socio-political order. Regardless of locals' hesitation to foreign rule, the French ruled the area of present-day Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam as the Indochinese Union, after establishing rule in 1893. France held these colonized nations until 1954 with the onset of the Geneva Accords officially removing French rule in Indochina. Throughout the French Rule, Ho chi minh made it his life's mission to free Vietnam from the chains of colonial domination.
Hô chi minh was a Vietnamese Communist revolutionary and statesman who was Prime Minister and President of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam). He led the viêt minh, which was a National Liberation Movement, from 1941 onwards, establishing the communist-governed Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945. The viêt minh initially formed to seek independence for Vietnam from France and then later opposed Japanese occupation of the nation. Hô chi minh lost political power inside North Vietnam in the late 1950s but remained the highly visible figurehead president until his death.
