Since the 10th December 1999 turkey is officially candidate at the Helsinki summit of the European Council to become a membership of the European Union. Negotiations started on October 3rd 2005 and should run at least several years. As the same time, the debate on the legitimacy of this accession began. Indeed, to be a full-fledged member of the EU, a country has to respect many criteria established by the European Council which are:
ð Stability of institutions guaranteeing democracy, the rule of law, human rights and respect for protection of minorities;
ð The existence of a functioning market economy as well as the capacity to cope with competitive pressure and market forces within the EU;
ð The ability to take on the obligations of membership including adherence to the aims of political, economic and monetary union.
According to the opposition of this entry, theyre not respected at all and before starting the negotiations, the EU should compel to turkey that it fix this.
Moreover, its EU membership could entail some challenges as opportunities in the foreign policy domain, because oblige Europe to be actively involve in this region, it will imply as well that the EU runs a serious risk to be involve in new political and institutional problems. Moreover, we can also notice that turkey can be an additional responsibility.
Nevertheless turkey is an undeniable chance in favour the European Union, as geopolitical and geostrategic standpoint. Its central location in Eurasia, its intermediary position between occidental culture and Middle Eastern, its tradition foreign policy affirmed are as many advantages that the European analyst put its forward. turkey is a real oriental guardian for the European security. Both sides, we consider that if turkey becomes a European member, this membership will add to the European Union more important power at regional and world-wide level. turkey could be a stabilization factor in this region and increase European Union role.
in this essay, we will point out the different benefits and disadvantages of this accession. We will try to examine thoroughly, from the point of view of existing members of the European Union, the extent to which the benefits of Turkish membership of the EU would outweigh the disadvantages.
