Résumé
This essay will not only intend to depict the Chen family that is at the centre of the film. We will also deal with what this specific household tells us more generally about the chinese society itself, above all as regards the chinese traditional family. Indeed the film goes beyond the Chen family to deliver an analysis of the relationships between men and women in the chinese traditional household. These gender relationships will constitute the main issue that will be discussed in this essay.
To analyse these relationships we will firstly deal with the mise-en-scène and the setting of the story in the Chen household, because it constitutes the meaningful context in which Zhang Yimou portrays the oppressive traditions of chinese family. Secondly we will throw light upon the Chen household. We will depict its rules and Confucian fundaments, which will help us to explain why women used to be regarded as inferior to men. Thirdly we will focus on the underlying principles of this patriarchal model of family, to see that it was based on economical and social principles rather than sentimental values. Lastly we will describe what consequences all these representations had on the roles of women in society and the household.
