It is not uncommon for authors to manifest their personal experiences in their works. Nathaniel Hawthorne himself spent numerous years in seclusion. The diverse characters in Hawthornes timeless tale of adultery and sin, do so as well. The various forms of estrangement are experienced to different degrees depending on each character and vary in levels of negativity and endurance. In Hawthornes, The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne utilizes various images of human isolation to illuminate how the characters have evolved throughout the novel, whether or not their seclusion is chosen as well as which form of isolation is more bearable.

Freudian psychology follows the notion that it can dissect the human mind into various parts and pieces that can be interpreted even if the individual doesnt realize what any of the messages mean. In literature, Freudian psychology can be utilized to understand themes, characters, or actions. The Greek tragedies are well known for being a basis for this through concepts such as the Oedipus complex. Eurpidess The Bacchae introduces the ancient world to several other concepts of Freudian psychology, such as repression and psychoanalysis, and effectively demonstrates Freuds concept of the mind, including the id, ego, and superego.

William Veeders essay Carmilla: The Arts of Repression, claims that LeFanus Carmilla attempts to explain the two-sided nature of human life through what he describes as dualisms. He says that humans attempt to find the side of these dualisms they wish to identify with, while pushing away the opposing view. This pushing away is dubbed repression. He asserts that this repression is caused by isolation, and Veeder identifies the most important of these isolations Lauras separation from women, specifically her mother: Laura craves the mother whom death has denied her (206). However, while Laura desires Carmilla to fill the void of her mothers absence, Carmilla consciously manipulates those feelings to have Laura become her next victim. To do so, Carmilla must first organize a plan of attack, which begins with an information gathering stage.

Chinua Achebes Things Fall Apart, the definitive post-colonial, African novel, focuses on a character who is in constant struggle with his tribe and with himself. Okonkwo, a purveyor of masculinity in his society, has many reasons for his actions in the novel. The continuing cultural violence in the novel and within the culture (often started and ended by Okonkwo), some argue, is inherent in the contradictions of the Igbo culture (Hoegberg, 69-77). Okonkwos actions, as well as the actions of others in the novel, explain a culture very sacred to Achebe, and through Okonkwos various actions and thoughts throughout the novel, the culture seems both precious and brutal, cultural relativism aside. Okonkwo is a character whose chi is in constant conflict, and Okonkwo himself is in constant conflict with himself over the masculinity, overall violence demanded by his honor based Igbo culture, and his relationship with his father.

There are many ways you can define a human being; through the volume of their voice to their everyday habits. Another is handwriting and when looked at in detail it can be a definition of ones self. I will discuss how handwriting and the means you go through to create it can show who you are. Also the experience of creating a new technology will be an influence on this topic. In The Art of Science and Handwriting by Naomi Baron, it was discussed of whether or not we could tell who a person was based on their handwriting. It said that handwriting could be an unfailing index of...character, moral and mental, and a criterion by which to judge of...pecularities of taste and sentiment (58). Its worth pondering that simply by looking at someones handwriting and their technology that brought it to life can tell you what kind of person they are.

If you read Washington Irvings tale of time, Rip Van Winkle, and Mark Twains story of deceit, The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, you will find a ball of fantasy and tall tales with truth and logic buried in the middle. In comparing these two tales, one must look at what exactly a tall tale can contribute and represent. These tales are alike as much as they differ in their structure as well as in their points. They can also be looked at symbolically and representations of our time and the politicians we have trusted throughout history.
To begin, both of the stories express characteristics present in tall tales. These sorts of tales take on imaginative and romantic qualities that are beyond logic. In Rip Van Winkle, the title character goes to sleep for years and wakes up in good health. Now a character sleeping for that long would need some sort of food supplement in order to survive. Tall Tales combine fantasy with sorts of logic in them and this is present in the tale.

Joseph Campbells Hero Cycle is an idea that anyone can relate to and be able to recognize. There are many stories throughout time that use this in their composition. Stories such as Little Red Riding Hood and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz format their structure around it. George Lucas Star Wars Trilogy also uses it as the basis of its story. The hero cycle is something that we not only read about, but we experience it in our everyday lives as well. In fiction it is expressed more unrealistically then in reality but both topics still share a common bond. We will discuss the elements of the cycle, how they appear in dozens of stories and tales, and how it finds its way into our everyday lives.

Joseph Conrad said, The belief in a supernatural source of evil is not necessary; men alone are quite capable of every wickedness. Only too well does this portray the harsh reality depicted in Heart of Darkness, one that Chinua Achebe defines as profoundly racist. Achebes points are accurate and precise, his anger, real and heartfelt. However, his calling for Conrads novel to be struck from the college curriculum is a direct violation of first amendment rights. Censorship is not the answer; if it was, then anyone offended by anything could do what Achebe did, and then there would be no books, television, movies, works of art, etc. The truth is, everything everywhere is going to offend someone somewhere. Conrads novella harbors great resentment for and reflects negative stereotypes against the people of the African Congo, but even so, I believe that Heart of Darkness remains neither an offensive nor a racist book, but rather quite the opposite. Conrad is trying to portray the darkness at the heart of war, depicting the English as superior and the natives as savages, so that he can then touch the reader with the intensity of Marlows realizationthat in times of war, everyone becomes a savage.

Flannery OConnor was born in Georgia, the same state that she wrote about some twenty years later in A Good Man is Hard to Find, as she describes with thoughtful imagery the grandmothers fierce objections to her family traveling to Florida. Having lived through the fifties, OConnor was exposed to a view of life that today might be considered profoundly racist. Before the sixties arrived, and along with them the Civil Rights Movement, the nationespecially the Southwas a breeding ground for ignorant standpoints and racist points of view.
The character of the grandmother echoes these small-minded sentiments. The author makes the grandmothers view of life obvious from the start. It is obvious that the grandmother feels separated from the rest of the family. She presents herself as regal, confident, the matriarch of the family. It appears as though she is disappointed with the laidback attitude with which her son conducts his life. Her view of life is very old-fashioned, which becomes more evident as the story progresses and the family makes their way out of Georgia and into Florida.

There are several different scientific classifications of memory. The type that memoirists most often use is delineated thus: Long-term -> Declarative -> Episodic.
Declarative or explicit memory requires conscious recall, which is what memoirists attempt when writing a scene from memory. Episodic, aka autobiographical memory, is made up of personal memories: sensations, emotions, and associations as well as events. Information in episodic memory is specific to its context, i.e. time and place.
While the physical mechanisms of long-term memory are currently unknown, it is thought that memories are consolidated and organized during sleep. Dreams are hypothesized to be our brains trying to make sense of the days events, and other memories
