Résumé :

The story of the immigration of the asian community to America is, like many other immigration stories a push-pull story. People do not casually leave an inherited way of life. Events must be extreme enough at home to compel them to go and alluring enough elsewhere for them to override an almost tribal instinct to stay among their own. The history of asian immigrants coming to settle in the New World is a history of diversity in spite of what one would tend to think. Although these immigrants were considered as part of one group, each community has its own background, its own traditions, its own underlying motives to leave everything behind and start anew in an unknown country and more than that, a white country. In spite of this diversity, trends common to a vast majority of all these communities can be made out though. This exposé will try to provide an overall view of this asian immigration to the USA by first identifying who these immigrants are, when the first came to settle and where they settled. Then, we will move on and examine the motivations lying behind their choice for the New World as their Promised Land and if it was a choice or mere destiny? When they eventually arrived, how their life, their working was and living conditions, how well did they manage to integrate this new society and on the other hand, how were they viewed by the white population. As a consequence of that, we will see that they had to face very harsh discrimination both from the population itself and from the government through different legislations that aimed at preventing them from migrating to America or denying them their civil rights. We will then end with a more positive aspect of their immigration with the end of the restrictions arbitrarily imposed on them and a brief overview of their contribution to the country's wealth.
