Sensation of movement when no movement is actually occurring. Results from peripheral or central causes or, in some instances, may be induced by medications or anxiety disorders.
Patients who are elderly and have risk factors for cerebrovascular disease (CVD) are more likely to experience central causes.

It occurs when the blood pressure abnormally raises in the arteries that take the blood from the heart to the lungs.
This pressure is not the same one that is measured in the medical doctor's office.
When the cause of this illness is pulmonary emphysema or an heart illness since birth, for example, we call this secondary pulmonary hypertension.

Glaucoma is an alteration where the pressure of the liquid that fills the ocular globe abnormally increases, beyond the eye can tolerate.
When this pressure, called intra-ocular tension, is bigger than the normal one, the risk of damages to the eyes increases.
Glaucoma is caused by the accumulation of the liquid, called watery mood, that circulates in the interior of the eye.

Illness provoked by the deficiency of production and/or action of insulin, that drives to acute symptoms and chronic complications.
The disease involves the metabolism of glucose, fats and proteins and has serious consequences in either if it appears quickly as when it is installed slowly.
In the current days it constitutes a problem of public health specially because it affects a large number of people.
- Illness provoked by the deficiency of production and/or action of insulin, that drives to acute symptoms and chronic complications.
- Classification
- Type I:Caused by the destruction of the beta cell of the pancreas
- Type II:Provoked predominantly by a state of resistance to the action of insulin associated with a relative deficiency of its secretion.

When numerous large tumors (especially intraligamentary mommas) are found, total abdominal hysterectomy is indicated. If the ovaries are diseased or if their blood supply has been destroyed, oophorectomy is necessary; otherwise, the ovaries should be preserved.
Ovaries generally are preserved in premenopausal women. There is no consensus about the virtue of conserving or removing ovaries in postmenopausal women, with advocates and opponents of such prophylactic castration both relying on hypothetical scenarios and not scientific studies.

Consciousness, the awareness of self and environment, requires both arousal and mental content; the anatomic substrate includes both reticular activating system and cerebral cortex. Coma is a state of unconsciousness that differs from syncope in being sustained and from sleep in being less easily reversed. Cerebral oxygen uptake (cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen [CMRO2]) is normal in sleep or actually increases during the rapid eye movement stage, but CMRO2 is abnormally reduced in coma.
- Consciousness, the awareness of self and environment, requires both arousal and mental content; the anatomic substrate includes both reticular activating system and cerebral cortex
- Coma is clinically defined by the neurologic examination, especially responses to external stimuli
- Fever may imply infection or heat stroke; hypothermia may occur with cold exposure (especially in alcoholics),
- In their classic monograph, Plum and Posner (1980) divided the causes of coma into supra- and infratentorial structural lesions and diffuse or metabolic diseases
- Flexor postures generally imply a more rostral lesion and have a better prognosis than extensor posturing, but the pattern of response may vary with different stimuli, or there may be flexion of one arm and extension of the other
- Pupillary abnormalities in coma may reflect an imbalance between input from the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems or lesions of both
- With few exceptions, metabolic disease does not cause unequal or unreactive pupils
- The EEG may also reveal asymmetries or evidence of clinically unsuspected seizure activity
- During the downward course of transtentorial herniation, there may be hemiparesis ipsilateral to the cerebral lesion, attributed to compression of the contralateral midbrain peduncle against the tentorial edge (Kernohan notch).
- The clinical picture of pontine hemorrhage (i.e., sudden coma, pinpoint but reactive pupils, and no eye movement) is characteristic, but if the sequence of signs in a comatose patient is unknown
- VEGETATIVE STATE

The cardinal manifestations of heart failure are (1) dyspnea and fatigue, which may limit exercise tolerance, and (2) fluid retention, which may lead to pulmonary and peripheral edema. Both abnormalities can impair the functional capacity and quality of life of affected individuals. In addition, by its very nature, heart failure is a progressive disorder.

For more than 50 years, glucocorticosteroids have been important agents in treating diseases characterized by inflammation and exaggerated immune responses. The pioneering work of Hench and colleagues in rheumatoid arthritis showed the possible potency of these agents in such pathologic states.
Although substantial advances have been made in understanding the mechanisms by which glucocorticosteroids exert beneficial effects, considerable gaps in knowledge remain. Despite extensive data regarding the in vitro and in vivo activities of these drugs, it is probable that glucocorticosteroids have different beneficial activities in different diseases.

The sound practice of medicine requires the ability to use scientific evidence that is based on data and is published in the peer-reviewed medical literature. In this literature, investigators publish their findings using descriptive statistics to summarize data and inferential statistics to test hypotheses.
Judgment is required in the choice of statistical tools and in the interpretation of statistical analyses. Physicians must have a basic understanding of statistics to benefit their patients by being informed and critical users of the medical literature.

The traditional evaluation of the patient includes the history and physical examination and a well-planned set of diagnostic tests, often including imaging. Dramatic advances in imaging not only supplement the physical examination, but also now may begin to substitute for part of it.
Medical imaging provides an approach for dividing patients into patients who have an acute compared with a chronic medical problem and patients who have an anatomic compared with a "biochemical" illness. These determinations are crucial for prompt and effective medical and surgical therapy.
