Half of all cardiac deaths are sudden, accounting for approximately 300,000 deaths per year in the United States. SCD is death due to instantaneous, unanticipated circulatory collapse within 1 hour of initial symptoms and is often, but not always, due to a cardiac arrhythmia. More than 70% of all sudden natural deaths have a cardiac cause, and 80% of these are attributable to coronary artery disease. Approximately 70% of SCDs occur in men. Compared with routine activities, vigorous exercise increases the immediate risk of SCD 17-fold.

Development of T & B Lymphocytes
Thymus-derived cells (T lymphocytes) mediate cellular immune responses; bone marrow-derived cells (B lymphocytes) are involved in humoral immunity. Both T and B lymphocytes are derived from precursor or stem cells in the marrow.
Precursors of T cells migrate to the thymus, where they develop some of the functional and cell surface characteristics of mature T cells. Through positive and negative selection, clones of autoreactive T cells are eliminated, and mature T cells migrate to the peripheral lymphoid tissues.

Clinical manifestations resembling allergic hypersensitivity can also occur in the absence of an immunologic mechanism. Specific examples include nonallergic (intrinsic) asthma, which is triggered by the effect of inhaled dusts and fumes, weather changes, viral respiratory infections, and stress rather than by aeroallergen-induced IgE-mediated mast cell degranulation; irritant dermatitis, the result of physical or chemical damage to skin rather than development of sensitized lymphocytes; and "anaphylactoid reactions" from nonimmunologic release of mast cell mediators.

With injuries happening daily it is no wonder that the medical field is constantly growing and evolving. This field has actively changed since its early incarnation during the Roman Era in which medicine was based on theory not science (Greig 41). With practices based on theory the profession was bound to change. It was more or less forced to change. The medical profession has switched its focus from a people-centric profession to a profit driven industry at the cost of the patient's health and wallet.

In todays environment of advanced medical practices and practitioners, it still amazes me that some doctors are so set in their ways that they are not willing to try alternative therapies for more debilitating conditions. When scientists can clone animals, cure diseases from newborn stem cells and put stints in major arteries to restore blood flow to vital areas, it would lead me to believe that most medical practitioners would be open to trying almost anything to help their patients.

In humans, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) controls the bodys circadian rhythms. Each day, sighted people have the opportunity to reset their internal clock based on the amount of ambient light entering their retinas. The retina contains a subset of retinal ganglion cells specialized in regulating the bodys rhythms. These ganglion cells project to the SCN from both eyes via the retinohypothalamic pathway. But how do completely blind people synchronize with their environment? Non-photic cues may help blind people sense the passage of time, but they are not always enough to regulate the bodys cycle of body temperature and hormones.

Percocet is a well known pain killer used to treat pain for moderate to severe sufferers of a wide variety of ailments. Percocet, or similarly composed products containing narcotics, are prescribed by doctors quite often for various forms of serious pain (ranging from severe, chronic, cases such as cancer pain to common cases such as pain induced by wisdom teeth extraction). The drug is composed of two main ingredients: Oxycodone, an opioid agonist, and acetaminophen, a well known and widely used analgesic. In colloquial terms, this drug is simply a narcotic drug and Tylenol.

As Becky waits for the bus on a chilly Thursday night she paces back and forth in anticipation. Stressing over why the bus is taking so long, she feels a pang of hunger in her stomach and realizing that she hasnt got anything at home to eat, she decides to quickly run across the street and grab a meal at the local McDonalds. Would you like to super size that? asks that girl at the register as Becky places her order. Sure! she exclaims enthusiastically, feeling content about how much more she is able to get for just 39 cents. Hurrying out the door she sees her bus pulling away from the bus stop. Damn! she says to herself as she walks back to the stop. Sitting down wearily on the bench she considers her options. She could walk home; after all it is only a ten minute walk, eight if she walks quickly. Then again, what if another bus is not far behind? Recalling one time when she had decided to walk and saw a bus fly right by her, she decides against walking home and resolves to stay put. Two minutes pass, then eight, then twelve. Finally, seeing a bus in the distance, Becky picks up her bag of food and rises from the bench, feeling glad that she had decided to wait for the bus after all and not realizing that she had just wasted over twenty minutes waiting for the bus when she could have been home a long time ago if she had simply decided to walk.

As a first approximation, genes can be defined as stretches of DNA that encode a single protein or a single functional RNA, such as an rRNA or tRNA. There are exceptions to this rule because there are mechanisms, such as alternative splicing of the primary RNA transcript into different mRNAs, that may intervene between a given gene and a finished protein. As a result, in some cases a single gene may actually encode multiple proteins.

At the bifurcation of the aorta, the middle sacral artery arises posteriorly and travels on the pelvic surface of the sacrum to supply branches to the sacral foramina and the rectum. The common iliac arteries arise at the level of the fourth lumbar vertebra, run anterior and lateral to their accompanying veins, and bifurcate into the external and internal iliac arteries at the SI joint. The external iliac artery follows the medial border of the iliopsoas muscle along the arcuate line and leaves the pelvis beneath the inguinal ligament as the femoral artery. Its inferior epigastric artery is given off proximal to the inguinal ligament and ascends medial to the internal inguinal ring to supply the rectus muscle and overlying skin. Because the rectus is richly collateralized from above and laterally, the inferior epigastric arteries may be ligated with impunity. A rectus myocutaneous flap based on this artery has been used to correct major pelvic and perineal tissue defects. Near its origin, the inferior epigastric artery sends a deep circumflex iliac branch laterally and a pubic branch medially. Both vessels travel on the iliopubic tract and may be injured during inguinal hernia repair. Its cremasteric branch joins the spermatic cord at the internal inguinal ring and forms a distal anastomosis with the testicular artery. In 25% of people, an accessory obturator artery arises from the inferior epigastric artery and runs medial to the femoral vein to reach the obturator canal. This vessel must be avoided during obturator lymph node dissection.
