America is country proud to call itself a melting pot of different people, cultures, and languages. With the exception of Native Americans, who lived off the land for thousands of years before the discovery of the new world, every one in the U.S. is an immigrant or came from descendants that migrated to this country. Initially, America was [founded] by 17th and 18th century settlers who were overwhelmingly white, British, and Protestant (Huntington, The Hispanic Challenge 31). With time, as the country established itself and expanded, immigrants become more diverse and integral to the success of the United States.By the
19th century, the ethnic component
broadened to include Germans, Irish, and Scandinavians, and the United States religious identity was being redefined more broadly from Protestant to Christian. With World War II and the assimilation of large numbers of southern and eastern European immigrants and their offspring, ethnicity virtually disappeared as a defining component of national identity. So did race
(Huntington, The Hispanic Challenge 31).

In its early years as a wealthy French colony, Haiti was the envy of European imperial powers; however, in the last two centuries it has undergone a major transformation from a blooming Caribbean colony to an economically, socially, environmentally, and politically troubled nation. Since the slave revolt of 1791 and subsequent independence in 1804, Haitis history has been plagued by corrupt and destructive leadership as well as by a struggle for political power between the urban mulatto elites and the predominantly poor, black, rural community (Foster 3, Haggerty, Tata, Weinstein 1). As a result, roughly two-thirds of the population lives in poverty, half of adults are illiterate, and health services are inadequate to address high infant and maternal mortality and major public health crises. [Moreover], real per capita gross domestic product fell at a rate of 2 percent during the 1980s and 2.5 percent during the 1990s. (quoted in Haiti Country Assistance Evaluation Report)

It is hard to make a clear definition of what is artistic, and what is commercial in the world of musical culture. Even more confusing is the concept of commercial art, or that art and music for the purpose of commercialism can actually be a genre or specification of a high art. For all intents and purposes, there are an infinite number of variations that lead to a potentially infinite grey area between art and commercialism. To this end, this study will examine all works on a spectrum that exists along a delineated axis. On one side is the commercial aspect, and on the other side is the artistic aspect of ones work. To be considered artistic, a work must have merit as an artistic piece without necessarily justifying itself by being a paid work. This does not mean that commissioned works cannot be artistic, but the institution and context within which that institution uses the music and the manner in which the music was intended play a central role in determining its place in the spectrum.

The nigrostriatal system through the basal ganglia is essential for regulating motor movement. Normal motor behavior requires a delicate balance between the excitatory direct pathway and the inhibitory indirect pathway modulated by the D1 and D2 receptors, respectively. Unilateral destruction of the striatum or its dopaminergic inputs changes unidirectional behavior in animals. The most common method of inducing a unilateral lesion is through the injection of the neurotoxin 6-OHDA in substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc). This lesion causes a lateralized destruction of dopamine neurons as well as a loss of striatal dopamine innervation. The anatomical and behavioral effects of amphetamine and apomorphine were examined to investigate the role of dopamine neurons in the nigrostriatal pathway. Amphetamine induced net ipsiversive rotations while apomorphine induced net contraversive rotation with increasing time after 6-OHDA lesions. The role of lesion size has contributed substantially to the rotational behavior of both drugs. Furthermore, behavioral effects of this lesion are similar to motor symptoms and neuropathology seen in patients with Parkinsons Disease. Hence, the 6-OHDA lesion may be a relevant model for finding the treatment of Parkinsons disease.

America prides itself on its immigrant culture and great progressive values that have been the key to political, economic, and technological superiority. Indeed, the United States is comprised of a diversity of cultures and ethnicities. Even with its progressive history and values, America is far from perfect. Prejudice and bigotry are still major problems in all aspects of American life. Although American culture values and respects diversity, personal and institutional prejudice and intolerance are still major problems of American culture.

How might T.S. Eliots poem, which has come to define the modernist movement, be different if instead of bearing the title, The Waste Land, it is called He Do the Police in Different Voices? This paper will not seek out any definitive answers as to the meaning of the elusive, chaotic poem that is The Waste Land, but rather it will seek slant rays of illumination on the poem by examining the editing changes effected by Ezra Pound, Vivien Eliot (Eliots wife) or T.S. Eliot himself. The change in title most certainly improves the reception and final production of the poem, and it serves as an important example of the significance of revision in T.S. Eliots writing process. Many such significant editing changes can be found in the comparison between the first drafts of the poem and the final production, and one can hope to clarify Eliots intentions and directions for the poem, as well as Pounds influence on those drives.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the emergence of Guatemala into the global economy, and explore the viability of trade and investment in the country. In order to gain a proper perspective on Guatemalas current and future economic position, this exploration must be carried out in the context of the countrys history, its culture, its political and legal climate as well as its economy. This paper will seek to provide a brief overview of all those aspects of Guatemala. This approach was chosen because a similar approach is necessary to successfully evaluate and conduct business in a foreign country, especially a country that is considered a viable emerging market by some, and an unstable dangerous business environment by others. It would be ideal to go into great depth for every single aspect of Guatemala as a nation, but of course, it is impossible, given the length and research limitation, to do so.

While there is debate about the effectiveness of advertising in society, few can escape the reach of advertising in everyday life. In one day at Dominican University, we witness the effects of brand names and advertising in many forms. Upon walking through the doors of Caleruega, the television mounted on the wall introduces the newest cereal from General Mills. The newspaper left on the ground informs me of a sale this weekend at Macys. The oligopoly of soda is represented in two rows of soft drinks. At the table, word of mouth presents information about the new Apple ipods. The Cingular logo says hello as I make a call after eating. After preparing for class, I delete an email from EBay regarding the new top ten presents for the approaching Christmas season. Aquafina reminds me to drink more water as I re-cap the bottle and head to class. My morning had just begun, and already 7 sources of advertising and branding had reached me.

The species Anas platyrhynchos, or the common Mallard duck, is a very well-documented organism, being found in virtually all parts of the world, with the exception of Antarctica. Like most other dabbling ducks belonging to the Anatinae family, the mallard duck is known to be noisy (or gregarious), particularly the female when exhibiting a decrescendo call, or a call which attracts other ducks, or ducklings (Rogers, 2001). The term dabbling is applied as most of the ducks merely dabble near the surface of the water to feed, rarely exhibiting diving behavior, feeding predominantly upon aquatic plant matter, arthropods, gastropods, and perhaps human-provided snacks of bread.

Global warming has increasingly become an all-encompassing issue in both the medias and public opinion. It is only logical then that more and more attention is being paid to alternative energy sources which may have the capacity to not only provide a more environmentally friendly way of supplying our electrical needs, but also bring energy to places of the world where it is not currently available. These facts are particularly relevant to the United States, as the nation is the largest energy consumer in the world (Pimentel, 2002). As a result, the U.S., which hosts only 4% of the world population, is responsible for approximately 22% of global CO2 emissions (Pimentel, 2002). Given that carbon levels stored in fossil fuel reserves are ten times greater than current atmospheric carbon levels, the notion of continuing upon our destructive path of fossil fuel reliance is completely impractical (Rotty, 1979)
