Résumé :
In 1979, was developed a new model for the industry analysis and for the business strategy development: The porter's 5 forces. This framework carries the name of its creator michael porter who is a university professor specialized in strategy at Harvard Business School. The model was published for the first time in a book called "Competitive Strategy: Techniques for analyzing industries and competitors" and written by michael porter him self. He is famous for his main studies focused on how a firm could develop a competitive strategy and so obtain a competitive advantage by mastering better than its rivals the forces which structure its competitive environment.
porter's Five forces which has become since that time a reference in analyzing the power of the forces governing the market. He has identified five competitive forces which recover all kind of markets. These forces are the intensity of competitive rivalry within an industry, the threat of new entrants and of substitute products, the bargaining power of the customers and suppliers. Each of these forces helps to understand the nature of the intensity of competition present on a market and how this market is or not attractive and profitable. That's why porter's Five forces are as used for existing firms which wants to anticipate the evolutions than for new firms which wants to know is they should or not tap the market.
However, despite the fact that porter's Model is one of the strategic tools the most known and most used, it is necessary to be aware that the environment evolved a lot since its creation. Indeed, nowadays business is not such as it was in 1979.
That's why it's important to wonder what the relevance of michael porter's 5 forces is to modern day Business.
