SummaryThe United States, despite its libertarian ideals and emphasis on equality, has more than once turned its back on its own citizens. Slavery, the most bruising, shameful mark in the history of this democracy, divided the American culture even after the Civil War ended and the slaves were freed. In the nineteenth century and twentieth century black society continually fought for their civil rights, pursuing an equality of opportunity that all citizens should find inalienable and duly granted at birth. Despite this, this pursuit of happiness was not without a long and complex history. From the Atlanta Compromise of Booker T. Washington to the Niagara Movement's eventual creation of the NAACP, the struggle for African American equality has been consistently evolving. Regardless of the differences in philosophical approaches towards achieving equality, the common factor within the civil rights movement has been the stress of unity, and the search for peaceful resolution through legislative and judicial means.

SummaryIn the 1960s Prague was abuzz with artistic excitement. Prague had long been the site of innovative creations in classical music and theater, but now the films coming out of the state sponsored film industry were making headlines, not only in Eastern Europe, but around the world. Czech films were winning Academy Awards in the US, being shown at the World Expo in Belgium, and being hailed by many in both the East and West as an artistic miracle. Most of these films went beyond simple art though. For many of the directors making films during the Czech Film Miracle moviemaking was a form of dissent; there only way of speaking out against a government that financially supported them but artistically and personally suppressed them.

SummaryEminent domain is, at its essence, the power of a governmental entity to take private real estate for public use, with or without the permission of its owner. The right is most often exercised as a last resort, when all other avenues of negotiations have failed, to acquire land for the construction of highways, Post Offices, hospitals, or the like. The concept of eminent domain was born in British common law, and was adopted by the Thirteen Colonies before the Revolutionary War. Upon the drafting of the U.S. Constitution, eminent domain was limited by the Fifth Amendment, which states ‘nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.’ This is a tacit recognition of a preexisting power to take private property for public use, rather than a grant of new power.2 Indeed, the Supreme Court found that eminent domain “appertains to every independent government. It requires no constitutional recognition; it is an attribute of sovereignty.”3 Thus American states, cities, school districts, and other governmental and quasi-governmental entities are afforded the rights and privileges of eminent domain.

SummaryWhen one examines even the earliest hunter gatherer societies it becomes evident that women have always worked alongside men. Yet as societies began to progress away from the hunter gatherer lifestyle, women’s work started to become less recognized despite its obvious importance. As time moved on and societies changed women were slowly pushed into the home and were essentially stripped of any political or economic power. However in the early 1900’s began being called upon as a reserve wage labor force, in which they would receive very little pay for doing their work in comparison to their male counterparts. It was not until the Second World War that norms changed due to the fact that women were performing just as well in jobs previously done by males. Not long after, the state recognized the need for change and began the implementation of several governmental policies aimed at achieving racial and gender equality . One of these implementations was known as affirmative action, and served the demand for equal representation in the workforce through government imposed rules.

SummaryThe myth of Robin Hood has not only created a long lasting fairy tale for our youth it has also created the definition of what Eric Hobsbawm calls a social bandit: one who gives to the poor by taking from the rich. Hobsbawm uses the myth of Robin Hood to identify bandits who have reached a certain plateau in their regional societies to be declared “social” bandits. These social bandits were supposed to have been pre-political demonstrators on behalf of the peasant population against those who had power in society. Alongside the definition of what a social bandit was supposed to emulate Hobsbawm gives criteria for who a social bandit was: mostly comprised of peasants in dire economic straits. However both the image of so-called social bandits and who a social bandit was in Hobsbawm’s view and also the view of peasant’s themselves were mere psychological creations; the reality of who their celebrated bandits does not qualify them for Hobsbawm’s definition of “social” bandits specifically in the Chinese region.

The system of corruption is undoubtedly to blame for the state’s lack of development- but to what extent? Starting with the state’s most authoritative leaders and policy makers, the corruption that has become a permanent fixture in Mexico exists in every facet of the society. Can any one factor be cited as a catalyst, or necessary component for this corruption to run such a rampant course? Can any one characteristic of a nation mired in corruption be singled out as explanatory, like colonialism or imperialism? In contemporary Mexican society, corruption is part of life. Much like the majority of nations in the world, there is a vast system in place which operates a nation, government. Whether a family of five living in Chihuahua will be granted a housing subsidy, or if an outspoken politician across the nation is assonated; these are merely events occurring within a government. However, in Mexico, the high level of corruption is hindering the progress of the nation.
