Much of the realm of psychology, especially in the disciplines of neuroscience and cognitive studies, is focused on identifying the unified characteristics of human thought and behavior. The brain is studied extensively: years upon years of theories and experiments have yielded an accurate map as well as concrete functions for each individual structure, most recently those of the cerebral cortex. The consistency of the modern brain is helpful in determining what specific occurrences are in fact abnormalities: much like standardized criteria for mental disorders are necessary for correct diagnosis and distribution of medication. And this is what makes the lesser-known focuses on personality and social psychology all the more interesting. A common person automatically draws a line between psychology and insanity. Yet everyday psychology, the interactions between populations and the self-awareness individuals uphold as the fundamental element of being human, goes ignored in a society increasingly fixated on the negative. An individual is more than a brain and genetics, but so often the individual is forgotten in matters of the mind. There is uniqueness to each and every person, a personality that will never be expressed again, a self that is alone in its composition. Sigmund Freuds theory of the psychodynamic personality accounts for many of these peculiarities that are, in essence, the souls of humanity. The focus of social psychology on self-consciousness formed through the eyes of others solidifies the relationship between the self and society that develops a blank personality into the true portrait of an individual.

Wilhelm Wundt, considered the founder of psychology primarily for his text book and laboratory, contributed one more lesser-known piece to the evolution of the science: reaction-time. Reaction-time in and of itself is a simple concept: it is the interval elapsing between the mental receiving of a sense-impression and the execution of a movement in response to that impression (Titchener, Simple). Yet the greater magnitude of his findings, maybe not even obvious to him at the time, reverberated down through the competing schools, securing a prominent role in the synthesis of these contradictory views called modern psychology. And it did this through structuralism. Edward Titchener, an Englishman studying under Wundt, shared his teachers belief that the goal of psychology was to identify the elements of the mind and determine how they combine with one another (Gray 10). Wundt studied this through reaction-time, noting how the time needed to complete a task increased with increased complexity. Wundt concluded that complex mental processes can be understood as sequences of more elementary processes, and he devoted his life to identifying these fastest-occurring elementary processes (9). Titchener, influenced also by British empiricism, wished to define the structure of the mind through analyzing conscious experiences (10). His desire to delve deeper than Wundt, to find the absolute root of mental processes and the mind itself, the very elements of thought, relied heavily on the technique of introspection. Wundt opposed this technique of inward looking, this self-examination of conscious experience, as unscientific (10). However, Titchener regarded introspection as the essential core of the structural view of the mind and of the mind itself, and the structuralists trained individuals to objectively and scientifically separate their sensory experiences into elements according to four basic dimensions: quality, intensity, duration and clarity.

From the Germain Lawrence website, I learned of job openings as an Awake Overnight Counselor and a Relief Counselor. I am very interested in these positions as I plan to return to graduate school to complete a degree in Mental Health Counseling, and would love to gain experience both before and during my education.
While I do not have prior residential experience, I am comfortable working with people, all people, regardless of their difficulties. I am a quick thinker, and am self-sufficient and able to respond calmly and responsibly to any situations.

This experiment was conducted as a way to look at top-down, versus bottom-up processing. Subjects read the names of colors off Stroop boards, written first in a congruent color of ink, and next in an incongruent color. This allowed an opportunity to analyze the data and examine the differences between the congruent and incongruent conditions. This provides for a deeper look into the way people process information.
Many variations of this experiment have been performed, and have indicated that the incongruent condition significantly slows down processing. Subjects usually perform more slowly in the incongruent condition, and also make more mistakes.

The enigma that is the essence of consciousness in modern society can be readily explained and analyzed by anyone with the ability to do so and does not necessitate the so-called authoritative citations that we so emphatically consider reliable sources. It doesnt really take a Ph.D. to write an insightful paper about it and the perceived implications that such topic poses on our sense of reality. We all possess a very individualized consciousness limited to our own individual perspective- a consciousness that at its very core relies not on external merit, but more so on the fundamental disposition of the person in question.

Welcome, all of you, to the United States of America, says the head of immigration at the U.S. Department of Justice. There are about fifty immigrants from all over the world who have chosen to come to the United States to live. She proceeds to say, There are a couple of things that I must go over with you before you ultimately decide to live in this country. First, we have freedom of religion, speech, assembly, and so on. Second, you are all equals here with no discrimination. Finally, the children in this country tend to get vicious if they dont get their way. They are also easily insulted so watch what you say. This behavior is said to be linked to videogames that are violent. You are more than welcome to go back to your country free of charge if you want. About half leave. For the ones who are courageous enough to stay, thank you, and welcome again, she says.
- This scenario is, of course, fictional and extreme but not far from the truth.
- The ideas of harming others originate from somewhere. Some say videogames teach children to act violent
- Mortal Konsquences also contains several studies done by a psychologist named Dr. Craig Anderson who presides at the University of Missouri-Columbia
- Viewing videogames have negative effects such as propagating racism and sexist stereotypes.
- There are many passive people in this country who live to play these violent videogames like Mortal Kombat, yet show no kind of violent and aggressive behaviors.
- Will it solve any problems if violent videogames are banned?

Emotions are innate and adaptive processes that entail the appraisal of life situations for ones well being and a readiness to act to sustain the state of well being (e.g., Barrett & Campos, 1987; Lazarus, 1991). The occurrence of emotion, especially of a basic emotion, usually elicits spontaneous facial expressions. Further, within a social context, an individuals internal emotion state is routinely inferred from their facial expressions, behaviors, and speech. Thus, the ability to display context appropriate emotions even when they are incongruent with internally experienced emotions is clearly valuable in social interactions.
- Developmental Trends
- Development of the ability to manage and regulate one's emotional expressions
- Children's expressive control of disappointment in particular has been investigated through observation techniques in several studies
- Cole (1986) modified and improved the disappointment gift procedure described earlier to explore age differences in the regulation of emotion expressions in a study that included preschoolers
- How Children Differ on Display Rules
- As predicted, girls expressed fewer negative behaviors than boys during the gift task
- Display rules can be employed to meet goals that are either prosocial or self-protective
- Studies have also examined the influences of temperament and risk for psychopathology on children's expression regulation
- Future Directions
- Temperament has been defined as individual differences in the likelihood of expressing the primary emotions and experiencing arousal
- In conclusion, the acquisition and use of display rules in childhood are related to the timeline of cognitive, emotional, and social development

Taxonomical terms like depression, schizophrenia, neurosis, and psychosis, among many others, are today wielded with ease by doctors and are readily accepted by patients. While they are thought to be scientifically objective qualifications, a crucial examination of the social context of their use demonstrates something altogether different.

The film La Pianiste is not only a stunning work of art; it also brilliantly portrays the psychopathology of Erika Kohut, a repudiated piano professor at the Consevatoire de Vienne. By leading us into her private life and exploring her "abnormal" fantasies the film creates a striking paradox: A talented artist whose musical renderings are filled with a passionate yet rigorous technical perfection desires to be brutalized and tortured during sex. Unable to realize this fantasy until meeting another brilliant musician with whom she attempts to act out her sado-masochistic desires, Erika inflicts the pain upon herself; she mutilates her genitals with razors. Forced to lie to her domineering and omnipresent mother, Erika goes to sex shops where she watches peep shows and sniffs left behind paper towels saturated with ejaculate. Her voyeuristic tendencies become more apparent when she goes to a drive-in movie theater and spies on a young couple making love. Once excited, she squats and urinates over the open wounds of her mutilated genitals, apparently eroticizing the burning sensation. For Erika, the sensations of pain and brutality are inextricably linked with sexuality and romantic intimacy. The purpose of this essay is to elucidate the heroine of this film by better understanding the reasons behind her extreme sado-masochism and their possible roots. What psychic mechanisms could be at work behind the motivations of such a complex and paradoxical woman?
- The film 'La Pianiste?
- existing psychoanalytic theory on sexual perversion
- Erika's accepts being subordinate to her mother
- Despite taking her daughter's career very seriously, and being by her side at all recitals and performances, it is obvious that the mother has no taste for music itself as an art form
- two possible reasons for Madame Kohut's behavior
- Concluding Remarks
