Résumé :
The issue of outsourcing has been the topic of debate among a wide variety of individuals for a while. As companies continue to outsource more and more business tasks and processes outside their native countries, there has been a division among those who embrace outsourcing and those who are oppose to it. On one end of the spectrum, there are individuals who embrace outsourcing and feel that outsourcing is important for developing countries, as it brings in jobs and opportunities to the population of these countries. At the other end of the spectrum, there are individuals who feel that outsourcing is damaging to domestic economies because jobs are being outsourced to the international market. No matter what side one is on, outsourcing is a reality that cannot be avoided. Nowadays, companies are using outsourcing as a strategic option to gain a competitive edge in today's overcrowded marketplace. However, some companies are jumping on the outsourcing bandwagon without carefully analyzing whether an outsourcing initiative would be successful or not (Aron & Singh, 2005). It is important to note that not all outsourcing initiatives are successful. Companies who outsource certain tasks or processes without careful analysis can see their market positions dwindle because of wrong outsourcing decisions. In this paper, an example of a company who had a failed outsourcing initiative will be presented. The company in question is alcatel. The service provider is hfs, a company based in India. All the information pertaining to this particular case was obtained through an interview with a representative of alcatel.
The aim of this paper is to uncover the many problems that can arise in an outsourcing relationship between two companies from two different countries. The purpose of this paper is to show that not all outsourcing relationships are successful and that careful analysis needs to take place before any outsourcing decisions are to be made.
At the outset of this paper, a case outline will be presented that provides an overview of the companies involved and the task that was outsourced in this particular case. Next, the paper will address the reasons why alcatel decided to outsource this particular task. Finally, this paper will conclude with reasons why this particular outsourcing initiative failed and what alcatel can do to avoid a similar situation in the future.
