Résumé :
Is cameroon in love with china?
china's growing presence in Africa is more than obvious. Truly, trade between china and Africa was multiplied by three in five years . At the same time, African people are both rejoicing and concerned by this new alternative power. I choose to speak especially about the cameroon case, as it is a country I partly know. The influence of china in cameroon is recent and china's interests in cameroon are more diverse than in other countries, since cameroon has both raw materials and a trade market. cameroon's government (President Paul Biya) is trying to develop a foreign policy based on multilateralism .
Within a month, between October and November 2006, five of the cameroon papers among the more serious published not less than ten articles and three entire files on the new partnership between china and cameroon . When Hu Jintao went to Yaounde several months later, the local press showed the same enthusiasm. This enthusiasm was perceptible among the population, and everybody was speaking about this new power that could overrule the old colonial countries.
The general mood is to a strong fascination. But local people are plainly aware of china's interests in their country. Cameroonians can be both very enthusiastic and fascinated and simultaneously concerned about china
In order to study Cameroonians' feelings about china's presence in cameroon, I worked on several articles extracted from the main Cameroonians newspapers and reactions I heard from Cameroonians. These reactions and articles have been collected during years 2006-7, when I was myself there, or more recently by Internet.
