Dear Mr. Sample,

I am writing to express interest in the writing position offered on samplesite.com. In May 2007, I graduated from College NAME with a BA in English and a concentration in creative writing.

My educational background and work experience have prepared me for this position. At College NAME I took numerous courses in writing, including advanced fiction workshops with NAMES, and advanced poetry with NAME. Other coursework included critical methods, professional communication, creative non-fiction I and II, and literature classes. In the summer of 2006, I used Carpenter Writing Center money to travel in New York and Rhode Island for private writing and reflection.

I am writing to confirm that my CV and covering letter were received. They were emailed via JobTrack on 12 October.

I am very much interested in the position of Pre-Production Administrator. I recently graduated Summa Cum Laude from University with a bachelors degree in English, a writing certificate, an honors certificate, and a minor in management information systems. I also have office management and clerk experience as well as experience in editing and publishing.

I am writing in response to your posting on Bookbuilders of Boston for a graphic designer. I am experienced in Adobe CS2, especially in InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator, and have experience with typography and typesetting, layout design, and print production. I am extremely organized and responsible and am always attentive to detail, and I excel at multi-tasking and time management.

I am writing regarding the posting on Craigslist for an editorial assistant.

I am currently a first-year MA student in College’s Writing and Publishing program. I have a good deal of publishing experience in several different areas, including proofreading, editing, design, production, and prepress. I also have excellent computer, research, and organizational skills, as well as experience with databases and information management. In addition, I am extremely dedicated, responsible, and attentive to detail. I am familiar with many commonly used publishing and layout applications, as well as with MLA, AP, and Chicago styles. I have also worked with house styles.

I am interested in interning with Name of Journal for the fall semester. I have just begun graduate study at College in the Writing and Publishing program, though I have been working in publishing in some form or another for a few years now.

I graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Missouri - St. Louis in 2003 with a BA in English and an emphasis in writing and publishing. I have experience in proofreading, editing, graphic design, print production, and layout design. I also have excellent computer and organizational skills, as well as web design experience.

I recently spoke briefly with you via email about possible design opportunities at Company. In case you do not still have my emails, I am including portions of them here for your reference.

I was referred by Name, my program director at College, to your listing on AIGA’s website for a designer. Though that particular position may be slightly above my level of experience at this time, it is definitely something I would like to work towards.

I copyedited for a Massachusetts law-book publisher and for a St. Paul-based newspaper publisher. And as the nonfiction editor of Minneapolis-based Spout magazine for over two years, I was responsible for numerous duties from soliciting and reading manuscripts to layout and proofreading.
