The novel, The Woman in White, seeks to revise recent accounts of the model of male identity posited by the first sensation novel(Ablow, Par. 4). In The Woman in White, the author, Wilkie Collins, presents masculinity through the character of Marian Holcombe at a time when femininity was a favorable trait in women. Marians sister, Laura, is another female character in the book that is semi-independent. Marian, who is essentially the main character in the story, possesses masculine traits that make her different from not only the other women in the story, but women of society as well. Marian is a conqueror, never afraid to tackle a problem or stand up to a man. To understand what makes up the traits of the characters, it is important to understand the author.

Relationships are still a mystery to many people in many walks of life. Man to woman, woman to woman and man to man. Dating is not just the only form of relationship in question by theorists of communication but all types of friendship are thrown into the controversy as well.
In 1973, Altman and Taylor came out with a theory attempting to explain and interpret the way relationships grow, and even die over time. The theory, called the Social Penetration Theory, is a broad overview of how relationships work over a gradual increase in time but in the end it doesnt do justice to each personalized relationship. The theory came with a number of different premises.

Concerning the use of musical rhythm as a sadhana, a path to liberation, one preliminary distinction to make is between the tantric means of rasa and the yogic means of bhakti; The mythological tradition inherited by Hindustani music distinguishes between gana (music for pleasure) and gandharva (music for devotional ritual). While the former does not accrue to the performer the spiritual merit (adrsta) of ritual offering, it does create the occasion for the rasa that is explained by the tantra of Abhinavagupta to be a means to the taste of the divine (brahmasvada).

The guru-shisya parampara is the system of master/disciple lineage that characterizes the traditional education system of North Indian music. The term parampara, disciplic succession, is introduced in the Bhagavad-gita (4.2), when Krsna tells Arjuna: This Knowledge of yoga was passed down in disciplic succession and in this way the seer-kings knew it. In the music tradition, the disciplic succession of the family lineage (gharana) is officially continued in the ganda bandham ceremony in which the student is elevated to the status of a close disciple with the tie of a thread around the students wrist. This gesture and a nazrana payment freely given with the greatest respect symbolize the bond between a student and his guru. The tabla disciples devotion to the guru is a form of bhakti devotion in the same way that a yogic disciple submits to the will of a guru in order to master the esoteric practices held within the realm of his teachers knowledge. Following the ganda bandham rite, the new disciple can expect to receive a more intensive training, including techniques and compositions reserved for close disciples. It has been argued that the dilution of classical music in modern day India is due to the decline of the gharana system that seeks the systematic dissemination of musical knowledge to such worthy students, in favor of the music college system which offers a survey education better-suited to hobbyists.

While Lawrence Ferlinghetti makes no claim to being enlightened, his poetry is nonetheless a record of and reaction to the sacred journey. While it is illuminating to read words of the awakened prophets of world history, I think it can be as rewarding to read the work of those who, sincere in their intention, still have some way to make along the path. In the pages of HER (1960), his poetic labyrinth-dream, Ferlinghetti takes the reader on a tour of a semi-mad period of my life, in that mindless, timeless state most romantics pass through, confusing flesh madonnas with spiritual ones. In his search for bemusement, Ferlinghettis character travels through the realms of memory, meditation and song that characterize the three-fold Greek idea of the Muse. For Ferlinghetti, these three stages become recollection, obsession, and painting in an attempt to propitiate his nameless, maddening muse. In the process, the poet contributes to the discussion about the relationship between the woman-in-time and the timeless-goddess.

The Himalayan religious traditions (Saivite Hinduism, Mahayana Buddhism, Tibetan Bon-po) are related by a common heritage of esoteric practices intended to unify the religious aspirant with the ultimate reality (as defined by the particular tradition). This gnosis is defined variously as dzogchen (great perfection), samadhi (contemplative absorption), and yoga (union) by the Himalayan religions. According to the mythological history of the Bon-po (the indigenous shamanic religion of Tibet), the meditation master Lord Tonpa Shenrab existed in the hidden realm of Shambhala 18,000 years ago. During his lifetime he is said to have taught the techniques of Dzogchen Meditation, the first such teacher to exist in this world-age. In this mythic history, the Bon-po seek soteriological superiority over the Hindu and Buddhist traditions which practice similar trance-states, by ascribing to Lord Shenrab two students whose later incarnations became Lord Siva and Shakyamuni Buddha, the progenitors of Hindu Yoga and the Buddha Dharma, respectively. One specific practice of Shenrabs Dzogchen that is found within the later esoteric paths of Hindu Yoga and tantric Buddhism is the cultivation of, and entrainment with, inner sound. In these sonic practices called by different names in each tradition, the goal is the same: the yogi aims to direct awareness inward so that all external phenomena and sense-objects are blocked out, and in their stead comes the awareness of that sound of the universal energy current, nada.

Evelyn Waughs The Loved One is a novel that with its darkly scathing humor attempts to impart the message that the plasticity of the present tense is illusory by exposing the superficialities of Californias mortuary business. The contemporaneous effect that living in a world where a perverse and fallacious immortality is valued over true organic human spirituality is placed onto the characters that are followed throughout the bombastic narrative. Through the strategic perversion of language, architecture, and the human body itself, death is made into a very sterile and pleasing aesthetic. Although Waughs message is a legitimate one, he does not exactly create a work that makes its message enter into a grand homology with a greater holistic cultural dilemma because the satire is too aggressively focused on the present tense and therefore maintains a rather rhetorical pretension itself.
