It is easy for cataclysmic traumatism to press to obscurity past history because of the weakness and shame of the human spirit itself. History is never a clean palindrome backward and forward, because during its recollection there is always an emotional motive, and nearly every motive is bruised. In her magnum opus Beloved, Toni Morrison lends her semiotic voice to people, who, during their own frangible history, were denied language itself. In one of the most spiritually brave novels ever written, Morrison refuses to allow the reader to disavow the imprint of history and pronounces the painful and debilitating effects it has on the collective humanity that does so. You will not read this novel and arise unmarked from the passing.

LSD, the common abbreviation for Lysergic Acid Diethylamide-25, often termed acid in the streets, is one of the most potent hallucinogenic substances known to man. The chemical was actually synthesized for the first time in 1938 by a German scientist named Albert Hoffman. However, in that year, Hoffman did not see any use for the chemical, and so it was scrapped into the useless pile. It was not until 1943 that Hoffman decided to pick up on the research of the molecule again. While working with it, he happened to either inhale or ingest some of it accidentally, and went through a truly novel experience. Since then, new more efficient ways to synthesize the chemical have been developed for further study.

Ever since the very day the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima at 8:15 AM, on August 6th, 1945, a question of moral or not? sprang up in peoples minds, even in the minds of the victims. Some people say the US did right in dropping the bomb to force Japans surrender, even though it killed thousands of innocent people, while others say this is totally inhumane and should have never been done. This book is apparently written to draw its audience towards the latter of the two opinions. Its gruesome descriptions of the wounded and thorough details of the lives of the six survivors may work wonders with some people, to draw a ton of sympathy. I think the author, John Hersey, is more against than for the Hiroshima bombing, because the book is about the suffering of the people, not the triumph of the US government.

Buddhism was not originally a Japanese religion, since the said originator of the way, Siddhartha Gautama (also referred to as Shakyamuni Buddha) was born in a region that is now Nepal, and spread his teachings mostly around northern India. China later received his teachings through various followers, and Japan was reached much later through people like Zen master Dogen Zenji, founder of the Soto school of Zen Buddhism in Japan, and Shinran Shonin, a Mahayana Buddhist who spread his somewhat original ideas throughout Japan in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries AD (wikipedia.org). These schools of Buddhism, although having their many similarities, also have profound differences in practice and especially in the type of people they reach out to. These similarities and difference will be explored through the referencing and analysis of two passages. One will be from Dogens Moon in a Dew Drop, and the other from a book written by one of Shinrans followers, Yui-en, the Tannisho.

eight and a half million people dead and another 20 million injured, it was a disaster unparalleled in human history. There was nothing great about this Great War except for the death and destruction. Erich Maria Remarques novel, All Quiet on the Western Front describes the pointlessness and brutality of this war from a German foot soldiers perspective. When the book was first published in January 1929 in Germany it sold one million copies in its first year. The next year it was turned into an Oscar-winning Hollywood movie. The title of the book itself, All Quiet on the Western Front, has become a popular phrase in todays terminology, meaning lack of action. Hitler banned this book in the beginning of World War II and it was also banned in numerous countries such as Austria, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, and New Zealand. The movies premiere in Germany was disrupted by Nazi soldiers carrying mice and stink bombs; they called it a Jewish hate film and a lie slandering German soldiers. The movie was not seen again in Germany until 1952.

What is Judaism? What does it mean to be a Jew? According to Websters Dictionary, Judaism is a monotheistic religion that traces its roots back to Abraham and having its spiritual and ethical principles embodied chiefly in the Hebrew Scriptures and the Talmud. There are three branches of Judaism conservative, reformed, and orthodox. Today, we have secular Jews and even Atheist Jews. Judaism is a set of beliefs that governs how people should lead their daily lives. There are many rules, such as keeping kosher and observing Sabbath; however these rules are very flexible and each person can make the lifestyle and religion their own.

The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair, was a revolutionary novel that changed American history, especially the history of the Chicago meatpacking industry. When the book was published in 1906, it aroused anger and disgust among the American public. The horrors of the meatpacking industry were exposed by Sinclair, and the government quickly began to take action and pass legislation. Americans and immigrants who lived in Chicago were all affected by the Beef Trust, which was a powerful organization that forced peasants to suffer through tormenting labor and produced enormous profits for the rich. Comparing the history of the meatpacking industry to the work by Sinclair, one would find that the representation given to us by Sinclair is a relatively accurate portrayal of life in Chicago during the early 20th century.

The concept of Artificial Intelligence has fascinated humans for as long as computers have been around. It should come as no surprise that countless engineers, programmers, and researchers are intensely studying AI in an attempt to create intelligent machines that can mimic human thought and behavior. Jeff Hawkins, the author of On Intelligence, praises their efforts but believes that ultimately, they cannot possibly be successful using their current methods.
Hawkins believes that the underlying principle of creating an intelligent machine is understanding human intelligence. It is impossible to create a machine that can think or act like a human being if that machine does not follow the principles of intelligence that humans follow. Unfortunately, scientists in this field have not focused on understanding human intelligence, but rather, they have concentrated their efforts on writing computer programs that would first match and then surpass human abilities. The problem with this approach is that although AI machines can learn many functions and even surpass human speed and ability in calculating them, these machines cannot understand the connectivity between various tasks and they cannot analyze them from a general scope. The machine will basically be calculating difficult formulas and functions, but it does not have any intuition to actually understand the significance and meaning of the functions that it is undertaking.

The Odyssey is filled with a large number of secondary characters that are, for the most part, very one-dimensional. Despite being very different in regards to themselves, as a whole they can be easily identified: they are briefly mentioned; they have limited dialogue; and they serve one of two functions: to either hinder or advance the journey. Furthermore, each character is described solely as they relate to Odysseus, and their motivations and drives revolve completely around Odysseus journey. As a result, the reader knows nothing about these characters in so much as their contribution to the plot. However, with the passage of time, there have been writers who have sought to give life and voice to these often overlooked characters, and an opportunity to see the story through their eyes. One of such individuals is Louise Glück, whose poem, Circes Power, is a modern day interpretation of Odysseus encounter with Circe. The greatest point of contrast between Glücks poem and Homers is the nature of Circes transmutation of Odysseus men and her reason for doing it. While Homer portrays Circe as an evil sorceress who changes men into beasts for no apparent reason, Glücks Circe is much deeper. Glück transforms Circe into a feminist, a critic of social norms, and a powerful woman who seizes control and tries to correct the injustices she witnesses.
