Throughout present day American history there have been many differing views on the Eastern European and Russian Jews as a people and the ways in which they have affected American society. Although often looked down upon, Russian Jews have actually contributed a great deal to the economic growth of New York as well as the riddance of sweat shops and opening of labor unions all over the United States, and have gotten a long way form their persecution in their homeland during the nineteenth century. Perhaps though a study of their history and their culture it can be understood just how difficult life had been for them and how experienced the European Jews really are.

As Becky waits for the bus on a chilly Thursday night she paces back and forth in anticipation. Stressing over why the bus is taking so long, she feels a pang of hunger in her stomach and realizing that she hasnt got anything at home to eat, she decides to quickly run across the street and grab a meal at the local McDonalds. Would you like to super size that? asks that girl at the register as Becky places her order. Sure! she exclaims enthusiastically, feeling content about how much more she is able to get for just 39 cents. Hurrying out the door she sees her bus pulling away from the bus stop. Damn! she says to herself as she walks back to the stop. Sitting down wearily on the bench she considers her options. She could walk home; after all it is only a ten minute walk, eight if she walks quickly. Then again, what if another bus is not far behind? Recalling one time when she had decided to walk and saw a bus fly right by her, she decides against walking home and resolves to stay put. Two minutes pass, then eight, then twelve. Finally, seeing a bus in the distance, Becky picks up her bag of food and rises from the bench, feeling glad that she had decided to wait for the bus after all and not realizing that she had just wasted over twenty minutes waiting for the bus when she could have been home a long time ago if she had simply decided to walk.

Individuals living in todays modern world have differing opinions concerning the so-called advantages of new technology that is available to us. Some are pro- innovation and believe that it has had a positive effect on our lives, while others believe that new technology has negatively influenced our existence. One such advance which has become extremely popular, but quite controversial is the use of e-mail. Some people, such as writers Judith Kleinfeld, Ed Boland, and Nicholas Negroponte argue that the use of e-mail has made our lives simpler in many ways. This includes the ability to be asynchronous, a simpler and less unpleasant way to give and receive bad news, and less of a commitment in romantic relationships. On the other hand, those on the side of writer Rob Nixon would agree that email has become too convenient to the point that it takes away crucial time from our busy lives that should be spent by our engaging in other activities.

When the United States Constitution was first being written there was a critical division between two groups called the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists. The Federalists opposed the Constitution and believed in a loose construction of government. The Anti- Federalists, on the other hand, believed in a stricter construction of government. The Federalists and Anti-Federalists brought up many very important points when revising the original Articles of Confederation. Two of the best examples of Federalist and Anti-Federalist perspectives concerning the creation of the Constitution include Brutus I by Robert Yates and Federalist 10 by James Madison.

According to material provided by the Hispanic division of the library of congress, by the end of the 1800s, Puerto Rico held strategic value for the United States, for both economic and military reasons. Puerto Rico would provide a new market for exported American goods, as well as a strategic naval point in the Western Hemisphere. Leading strategist Alfred T. Mahan, a naval captain, pushed naval power as the core of military success, leading the United States to replace ground warfare with naval movements. From then on, naval strategy drove U.S. foreign policy and military doctrine. These new theories played an important role in the Spanish American War.

Bartolome De Las Casas was a Dominican Monk of Spanish descent, best known for his moving work A Short Account Of The Destruction Of The Indies, which details the barbaric actions of the Spanish conquistadors in their relations with the natives of the New World. Even though it was written in the sixteenth century, A Short Account is still a significant work in our time, despite some of the stereotypes that De Las Casas includes. The author exposes important contradictions in the Spanish conquest of the New World and formulates a persuasive argument in favor of humane treatment of the native people. Centuries after it was written, A Short Account Of The Destruction Of The Indies has been studied by many world leaders interested in human rights, and De Las Casas is considered one of the first to champion this concept.

Fidel Castro came into power in Cuba on January 1, 1959. He obtained power through a 25-month revolution. Despite the use of guerilla warfare, the revolution was fairly bloodless. By this time Castro was a beloved figure in Cuba, regarded as a national hero. According to Sebastian Balfours work Castro: Profiles in Power, Castros objective was nothing less than the transformation of Cuba into a developed and independent nation. He intended to achieve this extraordinary feat by mobilizing the islands internal resources. (64) After Castro took control of the country, his policies and allegiances put forth to achieve this goal took many twists and turns, and many of his decisions and actions can be termed paradoxical. As Cubans experienced these contradictions and inconsistencies, they reacted in several different ways, including both supporting the government and turning their backs on it.

Society is no stranger to technology it has been adapting it and advancing it for decades. Technology has completely revolutionized the way we interact each other as well as ourselves. Due to this complete integration, there has been an addiction formulated. Human beings now thrive on technology and the way it facilitates life. However, not only does society allow society to facilitate life, it now alters it completely. The worlds technology has now gotten so incredible that science can edit the genetic makeup of human beings. This opens a realm of possibilities ranging from the treating and elimination of diseases to the potentiality of cloning. Genetic engineering has the ability to completely skew the human perception of self versus other, as displayed in the 1997 film Gattaca and is supported by the thoughts of doctors Michael Sandel and Yury Verlinsky.

The emphasis placed on environmental protection has steadily dwindled throughout history; today we find ourselves surrounded by cancer-causing products, gas-guzzling SUVs, dramatically shrunken forests and the impending doom of global warming. Citizens everywhere are playing the ignorance card, saying they never heard of these problems before and now it is too late for them to contribute in any way. However, if we consult women like Marge Piercy, Rachel Carson, and Octavia Butler, this threat is older than we may allow ourselves to believe. Their respective works, The Common Living Dirt, The Obligation to Endure, and Imago, all contain themes or warnings about the potential cataclysmic destruction that will occur if we as a people, a society, and a planet continue to disregard the flagrant warning signs Mother Nature is sending. However, humans, Americans in particular, are already too cemented in their gluttonous ways, hinging on selfishness, to save the planet, and consequently, themselves.
