Suicide. The mere mention of the word makes most of us disturbingly uncomfortable. Yet, just as we run outside, and down the street wearing only a bathrobe, transfixed by a cavalcade of emergency vehicles flashing lights, urgently needing to know what happened, our morbid curiosity about suicide overcomes our apprehension. Sure were squeamish and will deal with it only if we can act like adolescents, hiding their eyes (with open hands) or covering their heads (with see-through blankets) while watching scary movies. Despite our fear and outrage, we are still compelled to sneak a peek!

From the beginning of the ideas presented by Charles Darwin in The Origin of Species, and their gaining support from the scientific community, the theory of evolution was been met with opposition. A great deal of this opposition came from religious groups who believed in a creation from a divine being. Perhaps the strongest defense for the possibility of divine creation came from the ideas of William Paleys Argument from Design. Darwin, who came after Paley, proposed that it was not any sort of Intelligent Design from a creator that led to people and other organisms having various functions, but natural selection. Darwin went on to specifically refute some of Paleys examples, such as the vertebrate eye. When looking at Darwins theories and explanations, it is nearly impossible to believe that his work did not refute the work of Paley.

Twenty years ago a day of shopping meant going to one store for groceries, another store for clothes, and still another store for prescriptions. Today a day of shopping can be done with one door and one trip. Wal-Mart has changed the way Americans and other countries do their daily shopping. Giving the lowest prices they can, Wal-Mart is the largest corporation in the world. This paper is going to describe how Wal-Mart started in Bentonville, Arkansas from the owner Sam Walton motivation for the store, how the corporation has effected the United States economy, how other corporations have had to change to be able to keep up with Wal-Mart, and how Wal-Marts employees are treated. Sam Walton came up with a question wondering if people were willing to drive a couple miles out of town to buy items that were cheaper then the stores that were in town. And the answer was yes.

William Makepeace Thackerays Vanity Fair was published in book form for the first time in 1848, and was available in serialized editions one year prior. Edith Whartons The House of Mirth was published in 1905 making it highly likely that Wharton was aware of Vanity Fair and the main character of that novel Becky Sharp. The House of Mirth similarly uses a female character as its main protagonist and they seem to be very good foil characters in that both of them are looking to cement themselves into a high standing in the society in which they live. The difference between the two women is that they come from different countries, England and the United States. They are both outsides looking for a way into the circle, although they both have ins, they want ways to stay there. Could it be the case, because of how these two women were written, that American women in the aristocracy are better than English women of the aristocracy? The more likely result of a reading of these two novels is that both are equally as bad. The reasoning for this is Rebecca is in the circle at times and she is a woman who lacks moral integrity, and Lily is part of the group but she is being forced out and she is a person who though she is misconceived by many of those around her is of good character.

William Faulkner was one of the most influential writers of his time. He was a pioneer author and some even consider him to be the only true modernist fiction writer who composed in the 1930s. In that period he wrote many works that became famous, including novels such as: As I Lay Dying, Absolom, Absolom!, and The Sound and The Fury, and short stories like a Rose For Emily. The Sound and The Fury, written in 1929, was his first book and is one of the most famous. The story is told in four sections, not really chapters, due to the length, that are different days. The whole book uses four different narrators, Benjy, Quentin, Jason and a third person narrator; Benjy is a retarded 33 year old who is referred to as a man-boy, Quentin is a student at Harvard University, Jason is a worker at a farm supply store. Through the days that are narrated in the perspective of those three men, who are brothers, along with the third person narrative that focuses on the maid Dilsey, we are told the story of their sister Caddy.

College football is broken; in fact, it has been for as long as anyone can remember. The rankings system used by the NCAA to decide which teams get to play for the national championship every year is an entirely subjective process, and is inherently flawed. From split national championships to the latest controversies over the Bowl Championship Series, or BCS, college football fans have been subjected to injustices that fans of no other sports have had to endure. The answer is simple: scrap the BCS and add a small playoff system to the original bowl system.

In Marginalia, published in 1844, Edgar Allen Poe wrote, To be thoroughly conversant with a Mans heart, is to take our final lesson in the iron-clasped volume of despair. His outlook on humanity was somber at best, and is a theme that we see flowing through a large percentage of Poes stories and poems. The occurrences of the stories themselves are what classic horror stories are made of. His narrators tend to rest on the brink between obsession and sanity, causing us as readers to question their motives and actions, and through vague language, Poe allows his readers to fill in the blanks. In exploring the works Ligeia, The Raven, and The Cask of Amontillado, ranging in dates from 1838-1846, we can look specifically at Poes narrators through their motives and actions, as well as Poes use of language as a way to change our perception.

The historical figure of Gaius Caligula is one that has been mythologized, vilified, and misconstrued over the course of time. At this point in time, thousands of years after his historical reign over Rome, it is hard to tell what is fact and what is fiction regarding his life and his actions. Albert Camus presentation of the young ruler in the 1938 play Caligula brings up many questions that must be answered before it is able to truly understand the historical character of Caligula. Unfortunately, little is known of his true character, and much of the information we do know balances on the thin line between fact and fiction.

It has been said that love is the deepest and strongest of all human emotions. It is understood globally across all countries and continents. One of the beautiful things about love is that it can exist anywhere, in many shapes and varieties. It has the power to bring people, countries, and lifestyles together. Most importantly, it had the power to bring both Ernesto Che Guevera and Alberto Korda to their feet and ignite the revolution of Cuba.
It was not ordinary love that drove these two men to stand up for their tiny, impoverished country. It was neither sexual nor romantic. However, the love differs between the two men. Kordas love was pride; undying pride for his community and his country. Ches love was through power and control.
