Every child is born with a vast library of experiences which Jungian psychology describes as the collective unconscious, the contents of which are called archetypes. These archetypes are unlearned tendencies to experience life in certain ways, and manifest themselves in several forms. Some of the forms include the mother, the father, the child, and the maiden. Perhaps the most mysterious of these archetypes is the shadow (Boree 4).

Lester Browns book, Plan B 2.0: Rescuing a Planet under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble, touches base with most of, if not all of, the issues that are threatening our planets modern living style. The book aptly named, giving a second plan, one that differs from how civilization is currently being run world-wide to rescue the planet from physical and economic stress, and to save the people who are a part of this. There are many problems listed in this book and many solutions to them. The questions though, are the answers to the solutions feasible and easy enough to carry through? Maybe, maybe not. At least Brown has set up the framework for something to happen in the future to solve these problems. The biggest problem with getting these solutions to work seems to be economic though.

In literature there can be two major types of innovation, innovation in style and innovation in content. At the turn of the 18th Century innovations were huge as writers were creating what we now refer to as modernist poetry. Gerard Manley Hopkins and William Butler Yeats are two of the central figures that influenced the way poetry was read and the way it would be written by those that would follow. Between the two the whole look and feel of a poem changed. Both Hopkins and Yeats tried to restore writing and/or culture and in doing so were, somewhat ironically, innovative. Hopkins wished to revert to the way English was written and sounded when it was first created through his idea of sprung rhythm and his use of kennings. Yeats looked further back than Hopkins for inspiration and in doing so used Irish and some Greek mythology in the content of his works. The restoration effort of these two poets is a large contribution to the innovation of poetry.

Wuthering Heights is the story of two families that live on the moors in England and how the two families entwine themselves and is about the love and relationships that occur between them and their two estates. There is one relationship in particular, that is the derivative of most of the action in the story and that relationship is the one that exists between the first Catherine and Heathcliff. This relationship is important because although the two felt that they were one with each other and loved each other greatly it never amounted to anything. It was because of this, because of Heathcliffs pursuit of Catherine and his addiction to her that a significant portion of the action in Emily Brontes Wuthering Heights occurs. Heathcliffs addiction to Catherine is the reason that there is all of the conflict, all of the turmoil, all of the anger in the book. His love for Catherine is just like that of a mind-altering drug; there are instances when he is on highs and when he is in withdrawal, it makes him moody and excessively angry, it makes him hallucinate, it makes him search for revenge and it makes him happy.

Kants views on social and moral progress have always been described as being ahead of his time, probably because of the emphasis on freedom in many of his works. According to Kant, freedom is absolutely necessary for any kind of progress. Freedom is almost always tied to reason, and our ability to make use of our own reason. Indeed, the motto of Kants time was Have courage to use your own reason.

In many love poems written to praise the beauty or virtue of a woman, the woman or the womans love is often seen as a material possession or a thing to be owned. In Nathaniel Hawthornes The Birthmark, the woman is seen as something to be improved upon and perfected. Love is not only something to be possessed; it is something to be invested in, like any other expensive material thing. Hawthornes story is not only about love within a materially driven culture, it is about dominance and dependence. It is also about the struggle between nature and science, the obsessions produced by this struggle, and how the struggle resolves.

Euripides Trojan Women exemplifies the cruelty and painful consequences of war, and how they affect women by leaving them powerless and without choices. Several episodes in the play illustrate this loss of choice and power, the death of Astyanax, the sexual slavery of Cassandra and Andromache, and the ultimate irony of Hecubas slavery to Odysseus.
The death of Andromaches son Astyanax is symbolic of the final death of Troy and her brave heroes. Talthybius tells Andromache and the other Trojan women that A heros son could not be allowed to live. (Euripides, The Trojan Women. page 274) By this Talthybius means that the Greeks will spare no aspect of Troy. It also seems to show some fear on the side of the Greeks, that Astyanax may grow up to carry on Hectors legacy. What were you afraid of, that it made you kill this child so savagely? That Troy, which fell, might be raised from the ground once more?

At the time, Hughes was in the Soviet Union, touring its various countries and
struggling to put together the film Black and White with some fellow writers and actors. The manuscript Hughes sent Van Vechten that spring was some of Hughes most radical work. It praised Soviet government and ways of life while criticizing Americas hypocrisy and pride. Van Vechtens criticism, however, was less about the actual content of the poems and more about Hughes apparent naive revolutionary fervor. He seemed concerned with Hughes lack of poetic imagery and the overall impression it would make on his readers. It even seems a little ironic to me to ask a capitalist publisher to publish a book which is so very revolutionary and so little poetic in tone, Van Vechten wrote. Hughes disagreed with Van Vechtens impression of the manuscript, saying of the

Although Hegels concept of spirit can sound like a purely metaphysical concept, more simply it is the ultimate force of our wills. Hegel believes that the wills of individuals, (which are inherently free wills,) that make up a nation are a kind of collective consciousness, which has an ultimate destiny. That ultimate destiny is freedom. Hegel also believes that the ultimate destiny of the human race is to realize the freedom that is already present in their wills. This process of realizing ones freedom is the work of spirit.

Through the use of the character Daniel Quinn, author Paul Auster is arguing against the idea that identity is static and also against the idea that surveillance is perfect. This paper explores the complex life of Quinn by taking a good look at every character that he tries to become. It starts out by speaking about the fake author name that Quinn created to write under, William Wilson. Then it moves to speak about the character of Max Work who Quinn idolizes. Work is everything that Quinn wishes he was and from living through the eyes of Work for so long, Quinn knows how to act like a detective when the time comes for him to impersonate Paul Auster. The final character that Quinn lives through is the before mentioned Auster. He takes on a case pretending he is this man and the experiences he has change his emotional and mental identity very drastically by the end of the novel.
The next section of this paper focuses on how surveillance is never 100% effective. Author Auster illustrates that this is his viewpoint by having Quinn do some surveying of his own. Quinn has problems from the beginning of his detective work when he is trying to follow the elder Peter Stillman around the city. He then goes on a long stakeout where Quinn has the trouble that any person on stakeout would have not being able to see everything at every second. These are the two most noteworthy instances that are referenced in this paper and point out how surveillance can never be counted on to work.
