SummaryDomestic and social propriety are the most important concerns of wives of the era exemplified in The Canterbury Tales. Volumes of texts -- also known as deportment books -- are used to expound on domestic and social propriety and to teach young women the expectations of women in general, and in the confines of marriage. The information in these deportment books cite laws, social mores, and the Bible to procure the husband’s position as head of the household. In The Franklin’s Tale Dorigen exhibits a form of social propriety that is most congruent with the social mores of the time in which The Canterbury Tales was written. On the other hand, Alisoun, The Wife of Bath, exhibits none of these conventions, and instead uses her own financial success and personal experience to invalidate the conventions set forth by the church and men in power. Dorigen and Alisoun are archetypal extreme opposites in the spectrum of domestic and social propriety.

To this end, Confucius taught others what he felt were the core values of ancient Chinese culture, and in effect changed China forever.
The two most stressed values that Confucius taught were Ren, “Perfect Virtue”, and Li, “Rules of Propriety”, both of which, according to Confucius, are needed in order to become a superior man. Confucius’ idea was if each person were to become superior men on their own, there would be no need for social reform, because everyone would already be living by values that perfected China as a whole.

SummaryMany feel that a film adaptation needs to be completely faithful to it original written format. “When viewing the film version of a novel or play they know, they want to find in the film what they valued in the literary work, without asking whether this is the sort of thing film can do” (McFarlane 165). Often film makers have to make changes to novels in order to tell a compelling story with a medium which is completely different from literature. This said, High Fidelity’s film adaptation is as close to a completely faithful transfer from literature to screen as can be found. Sadly, this faithfulness to the novel still has its opponents.

SummaryAccording to Jane Donawerth in Frankenstein’s Daughters, the only way for women to write science fiction, is for them to change the rules. This is certainly the case with Octavia Butler’s “Bloodchild”. In Butler’s Nebula award winning short story, Butler tells the tale of Gan, a young boy who has been raised to bear the children of a controlling alien species. Although the subject of human slavery and surrogate mothers is nothing new to science fiction, men bearing children is. If you look at “Bloodchild” through Donawerth’s eyes, you can see the many changes that Butler had to make to ensure her story would be enticing enough for the average science fiction reader.

Ironically, Rome began as a small city-state with little to distinguish itself. The land was difficult to cultivate, and they were surrounded on all sides by enemies. Romans didn’t have a natural harbor that they could use for mercantile trading, nor any other way in which they could make a living for themselves. Surprisingly, Rome’s poverty was one of the more influential reasons for their survival as a people. Luckily for Rome, they had nothing to offer invaders. Unbelievably, this small city-state eventually grew to rule an area two-thirds the size of the continental United States (p57).

SummaryOne of the central themes of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, is love. Stowe felt that love could bring an end to the evils of slavery, and be a redemptive force. There is one character in this novel that embodies complete, unfaltering, and unconditional love: this character is Eva St. Clare. The only thing that Eva hates is slavery and mistreatment of others. Eva displays many types of love through the novel as well. She shows maternal love, familial love, and of course Christian love. Eva (along with Tom) is as an obvious Christ figure as well. Christ also had to provide a sort of maternal and familial love to his disciples, and in doing this showed them the Christian way to love. Through her actions Eva had an incredible effect on every character she came into contact with.

SummaryIn all the various interrelated issues of the border, there is one central group that is essential to allowing immigrants to cross in the United States: the coyotes. Coyotes are smugglers who assist immigrants in getting across the border without getting stopped by the border patrol, or anyone else. They are almost always Mexican, and often were at one point immigrants themselves, who over time have made enough trips across the border to know the best routes to take, where they will encounter the least amount of trouble. Coyotes do provide a service to the immigrants, and this service, of course, costs money. Today the cost is much higher than it has ever been, for a number of reasons. The border patrol has increased security greatly in the past, and despite their best efforts, this has only made coyotes have a more lucrative occupation, due to the fact that coyotes are no longer a luxury, they are now a necessity (Campbell). Immigrants have almost no chance of crossing the border without a guide. The immigrants do run the risk of being abandoned, robbed, raped, or even killed by people in line with their coyotes, or by the coyotes themselves. However, some coyotes safely get people across the border. The question is then: how should we view coyotes? Are they heroes, villains, criminals, or somewhere in between? Coyotes as a collective group are criminals who are necessary.
