Throughout time and across most historical records, people have been asked to have faith in some all-knowing, omnipotent deity in one form or another. Whether snake worship with human sacrifice or God in heaven above, we are all asked to have faith. Who is doing the asking? Well, just about everyone. From your neighbor next door to your boss at work and from the sidewalk preacher to the bicycle-riding advocates, there is always someone asking you to have faith. Some people are very subtle about the way they introduce their doctrine, others try to ram it down your throat. All in all, wherever you turn, someone is preaching about faith.

Human beings are the most sophisticated animals on earth, capable of raising entire civilizations through their mastery of tools and their uncanny ability to manipulate their environment. This concept of control is enforced from early childhood as stable and predictable lifestyles are depicted as good and idealistic. Although events happen throughout peoples lives which are out of their control, people generally like to believe that they are in command of their lives, and that every outcome is a direct result of their actions. This illusion of control is precisely what the gambling industry exploits, on an absolutely enormous scale. Gambling is becoming increasingly popular in the media with televised poker, internet gambling and movies like the recent James Bond movie Casino Royale. Everybody from teenagers to the elderly can indulge in activities like poker, slot machines, bingo and lottery tickets to satisfy their needs for adventure and risk taking. Despite its popularity in modern society, it is generally acknowledged as a negative pastime due to its addictive demeanor and ability to ruin peoples lives.

Since the dawn of the human race, humans have recognized the need to work together in order to ensure their survival. This mindset allowed for the development of hunter gatherer societies which eventually evolved into fixed communities. Eventually these small irrigation based communities grew into what would be recognized today as ancient cities. Although much time has passed since the development of these first cities, they still have many of the same characteristics found in modern day societies. However, the term City is vague and must be examined before comparing ancient societies. Gordon Childe developed a checklist to help distinguish cities from simple towns. Population density, labor specialization, state-level organization and class systems are examples of important characteristics shared amongst all true cities (Childe, 1950).

Political philosophers have been offering different ideologies regarding human nature and the development of governments for thousands of years. Some have claimed that humans are naturally good and compassionate whereas others have argued their selfish and brutish nature. Civilizations have adopted communism, democracy, dictatorships and almost every other system of power imaginable. What seems to be a common understanding is that human beings need a system of government to ensure the preservation of their societies. However, governments often desire more power and begin to impose their rules and their will on people of other nations.

Adventures in the middle of the night were something I was always very fond of. For the most part they never seemed to get me into much trouble; I just coveted the feeling of being able to sneak out of my house without getting caught. For a fifteen-year-old, it was definitely a thrilling feeling. Once I escaped the thresholds of my house, I would take off running as if I had just robbed a bank, in case my mother had heaved from her bed. Not once did she catch me. I never did anything too extraordinarily rebellious when I secretly left my house. Most of the times I would just take a walk, go to the store, or meet up with some friends who were doing the same thing as I.

Modern literature has often attempted to put poets into categories, based on the type of literature that they have written for the world. Shelley and Coleridge were regarded as a few of the most prominent Romantic poets, due to the vivid imagery and immense emotions that their works convey. Their writing styles and techniques are infamous for the intense feelings and powerful depictions that they created with their mastery of the English language. Through their use of metaphor, simile and imagery, Shelley and Coleridge have allowed their works to speak to the audience in a way that allows us to truly comprehend the message they wanted to express.

The Samkhya School of philosophy has what I believe to be an agnostic note on the nature of creation and on the existence of God, although not atheistic in the sense that there is still a cause for evolution. In this essay I will try to show how the Samkhya idea of creation is appealing but it does have some problems associated with it. In my opinion it does adequately show a way in which things could have been created without the need for a creationist God.

On September 9th 1976 came the death of perhaps the most influential and feared leader in the history of the modern world. As visionary and well regarded as any Pope, and as reviled and hated as much as Hitler, there is no questioning the enormous influence that Chairman Mao has had on China.
Chairman Mao, or Mao Zedong, was the leader of the Chinese Communist Party for over 40 years, and was responsible for some of the biggest changes within the countrys history. It is nearly 30 years since his death, yet his influence is still felt in all areas of modern Chinese life. Despite this, unless you have studied communism or Chinese history, you probably know little about him, or the events that occurred under his reign. Maos life is one of historical significance, great endeavour, and tragic mistakes.

There have been many attempts over the years to try and define what constitutes knowledge. Up until the early 1960s, the general consensus was that the tripartite analysis of knowledge was correct. However, it is now widely accepted that this is not the case, due to the work of Edmund Gettier (Analysis 23, 1967). However, although Gettier pioneered the way forward in the analysis of knowledge, he did not offer a satisfactory attempt to correct the tripartite analysis. In this essay I will try to show how Gettier exposes the flaws within the tripartite analysis. I will also show why I believe Gettiers answer to be incomplete, looking at an attempt to add to his ideas. The best attempt to correct or add to the Gettier analysis is by Alvin Goldman. (1967). He proposes a causal theory of knowledge, which I will look at later on.

It is my opinion that the distinction between self and body, as set out in the Vaisesika and mentioned in the Vedanta (Sourcebook, 1957, pp121-138, 386-423) , is an extremely cogent theory which seems to be able to reply to most objections raised to it. In this essay I will attempt to show how this theory works and any problems that are raised regarding it. I will also show the similarities and differences between the theory of self and body in the Vaisesika and the Bhagavad-Gita, and show how the Vaisesika seems to have the upper hand in the area of dispute between the two (Chakrabarti, 1999, chs 2-10).
