- Obvious human rights' violations are led by Israelis, especially since the beginning of the second Intifada
- The international community is also committed in the issue - between condamnation and complicity
Résumé :
As Ilan Pelec warned it in the Preface of his book, Human Rights in the West Bank and gaza, Legacy and Politics (p.12), the question of human rights in the West Bank and gaza Strip remains a controversial one, where a balanced analysis is hard to conduct. The two camps, Pro-Israeli and Pro-Palestinian, are strongly opposed to each other, defending their viewpoints without concessions. Even, Ilan Pelec acknowledges that 'it is well known that objectivity in the social sciences is elusive and never completely achievable [...]'. To avoid controversy, Pelec even explains that among all the nominations used to call the West Bank and the gaza Strip, he's choosing to refer to them as 'the territories' , which is -according to him- the expression with the less connotations (Ilan Pelec, Human Rights in the West Bank and gaza, Legacy and Politics, p.1). This choice of words reveals how burning and controversial the question is and how careful searchers must be in order to produce a worthy piece of work contributing to the analysis of this problem.
The point of this work is to focus on the territories and to assess the question of the respect of human rights, in regard with international rules. More specifically, a focus will be made on Israeli relation towards Palestinian rights, since the state is often accused of an abuse of power.
